Hello! This is my second time around following this tek. My first round went well, my cakes turned out wonderfully, but life got crazy so I couldn’t actually grow beyond the cakes (kid with cancer, yikes.) Anyway, I just did a new set of cakes, but this time I tried it with only one hole in the lid. Can anyone tell me about how long it might take to see some mycelium starting? I did two holes last time and of course could see the growth right away. Just curious so I know if they didn’t work, and I can restart:) Thanks!!

My jars have been doing great, they've been fully colonized for 5-6 days and it's time for birthing, however I noticed that some of them have little bluish spots in the mycelium. Could this be a mold contamination?

birth those and get those dunked and rolled. those are ready. That is just bruising.

It'll take a bit longer to see growth, if you did one hole in the center, cause its gonna colonize from the inside out. but it should be fine

How bad is bruising?
It turns out the jars were a little wider at the bottom than the top which got all the cakes stuck. I'm mad af. 3 of the cakes I got out with a butter knife which cause significant bruising. The other 3 I broke with a hammer which also cause bruising but to a smaller area. I accidentally made a 0.4inch/1cm hole in one of the cakes with a glass shard, how badly will this affect it?

bruising will go away after a couple days if the conditions are kept proper.

One last question: I have dunked and rolled the cakes however my vermiculite is very coarse (large pieces) and it didn't stick very well to the cakes and they have bald spots. They've been in the fruiting chamber for a day, misting them 2x a day. Should I put some verm in the blender and then wash the cakes and roll them in it again?

So 5 out of my 6 jars are pinning with one of the jars having a grown mushroom already but it looks a little strange - it's not very big and it's like it doesn't have a veil.
This is supposed to be a golden teacher, is it ok?

For the past 5 days: Humidity is OK, there's moisture on the walls and top. Misting and fanning 3x a day. FAE is so-so, I should have put more holes on the sides.
Since yesterday: I started leaving the lid turned upside down now for better exchange. I also think they were a little dry so I made bottom watering dishes and started misting 3x a day with fanning after that.

I have a few cakes in half pint jars that are doing pretty well (inoculated on 23/06). But what I noticed is that they tend to grow more upward towards the dry verm. I've read in multiple places that turning the jar upside down usually does the trick. Just wondering if a) it's true b) it's done when the jar is like 90% colonised except for the bottom. Or should I just relax and wait? Cheers!

naw just let it be. itll colonize the area in due time. flipping the jar will disturb the dry verm barrier and can cause issues.

This may have been mentioned already but what's the purpose of the light on the SGFC? Is it necessary?

It's not necessary to be placed right on the tub. It's just how some people have done it. That's why he showed 2 examples. single tub side light, and over head to light a whole closet.
If you mean why light at all, because mushrooms need light to grow healthy.

Constant light? Will leaving the light on in the room suffice?

What's the advantage of using lids with holes vs multiple layers of foil?

You won't accidentally tear up a lid and jars come with them. Just easier to work with, wouldn't want to poke 4 holes in foil and hope i don't tear up that foil while innoculating. Lids stay nice and tight against the dry verm layer so it's not going to shift around much when handling, a loose layer can lead to failure.
