Gifts from MorePies: 55gal Drum

So I recently visited MorePies to check out his up-and-coming mushroom farm. I have him a plate of the Bioluminescent and he hooked me up with a fully colonized jar of Brahtslavian Oyster (sp?) which I G2G'd and a fully colonized10lbs bag of an oyster who's name escapes me which I fruited two days ago (no pins yet).
The grain spawn he used for the Braht was 50/50 milo and oats. I really like this consistency as it gave the numerous inoculation points as well as had larger reservoirs of nutes (which while not scientifically proven to be a thing I just have a hunch about vs going 100% milo or millet). Also his oats were much smaller than mine- which is quite interesting.
Anyways here's the jar

And the bag

My GH has been running fairly optimally - I'm going to play with a timer though as I still have yet to try MorePies floating fogger method my long shifts have had an impact in growth. Will keep this updated with their growth, and will be running side by sides with the Braht. Stay tuned

fully colonized 10lb bag!! lucky I am interested in that 'bratslavian' (sp) oyster. I think I had seen it for sale from ashenville fungi or aloha. Looked like an interesting one

Glad we could get together and have some good times in Austin!
I know what's in that bag and I'm not telling
The mix grain is nice, but unless you cook the milo separately, it's moisture contentis always a touch dry. That said, I do a 20hour soak starting with hot tap water. I strain for an hour, add gypsum then cook.
And make a darn float already!

MorePies I have a question since your using mixed grain, do you notice any difference? I'm thinking about wild bird seed and reading about composition variation.
So is there any difference to speed, strength and life length?

When using the mix to spawn bags, the bags run faster. I spawn by weight, not volume, so a dense spawn has more inoculation points. Nutritionally, milo is tops.
How long grain spawn lasts in the fridge depends on the temp swings in the fridge, humidity, and how good your filter is. I've used this mix after 5 months in the fridge and it's been OK. Not ideal to save it that long.
The more variety of grains in your spawn mix used the harder it is to get moisture content right. Lots of folks make great spawn with wbs. I've never tried it as I have a feed store near by.
A dense spawn sterilizes thoroughly as there are less air pockets. My contams in spawn jars are very very very low, and I think this helps. Improving the rest of my technique helped more.

Good information, mate! I've been thinking about milo or millet for awhile now so I think I might try this out for my next run.

The bag finally consolidated enough to pop out some happy pins! And the oat spawn bags are coming along nicely!

You can tell the bag got a little dry on my 16 hour work day on Sunday- but I feel like it is recovering well. Still need to make that damn float

Broke as fuck + bleach cleaning= not optimum chairs. Thanks for noticing. I literally skip meals to afford all my Mycology stuff- I work 60-70 hours a week being underpaid competitively for 50. The only time I have to do just about anything is a night before a day off and I just don't take my meds and stay up and get a lot of mycology work done. My house is always a wreck, even when I take 2 whole days to scrub the fuck out of it. I've seen modest 1 room apartments with more square footage than my 2 bedroom shared house. But the rent is cheap and the neighborhood is good and the landlords are on top of service requests. If I worked at a competing restraint I'd at minimum make 10k more a year- but I'm invested in the people and the brand and I care enough about my fellow managers, my higher ups, and my "employees" (hate saying that- they are my coworkers) that I won't jump ship soley for more money. So I made the conscious decision to make less money because I know that if I had left when we filed for bankruptcy for a second time and every GM and Area Director left the company and we got bought out by a new company- if I had left then- my mentor and now GM would have lost her mind and the restaurant I so loved would have definitely shut down- and all my wonderful cooks and dish and servers and caterers would have been out of a job. And I just couldn't do that.
So yeah, thanks, thanks for pointing out how shitty my adornments are. The funny thing is with all my mushroom stuff there's not even hardly room for anyone to sit in that chair anyways. I know you probably mean no harm but shits been rough mate.

You sound like a good guy TA, best of luck! The restaurant business is though, maybe a marketeer could look into it.
Tried looking up this Brahtslavian Oyster but couldn't find anything, did find Aloha's BRAT oyster, is this the one? Very dark color, looks great.

True there is bleach fumes, but I put the lids on and leave to cool, or replace the lid for cleaning. Definitely don't want to breathe that stuff in, use a mask, "The Dangers of Bleach".

With milo I had been just soaking, but I started to notice longer colonization time on everything, so I finnaly went back to soak and a short boil, and wha la, it has been coming out perfectly. It's just a really hard grain. Maybe do a short simmer/boil if they seem too dry.

I mostly use iso but when I clean my house really good I use bleach. My "lab" is my kitchen- so I'm honestly surprised I don't get more contaminants. But I perfected sterile technique over about 6 years of SAB use - and except for a flub up when I first got my space modulator - er - bacticinerator I didn't let it heat up enough before use (got it on eBay, no instructions) so had a bad contam % on that run, but other than that I'm damn near 99%.

1 grain bag contamed

1 grain bag ready to spawn- and probably G2G as well

Oyster bag, though running into some rH problems, is coming along ok- the top guys were pushing through the filter patch so I cut a hole for them. They kinda just pinned wherever the wanted

I need to make that goddamn float, I swear to Muad'dib sometimes the simplest tasks are so difficult for me to complete.

Milo was a pain to get right. Using just tap water and soak, I've had to go to 24 hours. I'm out of wbs again so I'll probably start using straight Milo full time. Plus the kids hate when I pc WBS. Makes the house smell funny. Milo doesn't do that.

Man these fruits are massive! Still growing too! I have a bit more time between work than usual today-tomorrow so I'll be able to babysit them a bit. Frequently misting, upped the ultrasonic time while I'm home and can refill it as needed. The rH fluctuations here in north Texas have been so extreme lately it's been hard for me to keep up.

Bratslavian Oyster is an Aloha strain. Looks like aloha just redid their culture site and I can't find the link right now. Some farms in the northeast run it as their main blue strain.

Asked about the strain earlier in this topic, did found the Aloha BRAT oyster strain. Which does come from Bratislava, but they have darker caps on most pictures, might be the fruiting conditions.

About 35 hours after spawning- everything is recovering well- though the Hardwood is outpacing the Pine thus far. The oats bag is dry and with a lot of burst kernels so I don't know how well it will do. The jar is WBS that will be G2G'd to two oat/Milo bag.

I used a new Soak method for the oats that Lipa mentioned in a post once- hotwater Soak for 5 hours dry for 30 minuets (I did almost an hour because it was nighttime and quite humid) - I really like the results- very few burst grains and were about the most hydrated I've ever had them without being overdone. I simmered the Milo for 45 minutes and while I think I could have hydrated them a bit more I'm pretty happy with it- just a few burst kernels after PC.

In the past Maitake actually did better and BSOY2 did about the same as hardwood. I've also got 2 of each supplemented ready to go when the next spawn bag is colonized.

Is that fresh cut sawdust or from kiln dried product? Kiln drying pulls a good bit of the resins out during drying. The pine i'm using now is kiln dried shavings but when I can swing it, I plan on running saplings through a chipper.

2nd flush on the bag hasn't started yet- I've kept conditions pretty good for it so I'm thinking of dunking it- patching up the one side and trying to fruit out of the other. Thoughts?

Updates on the rest:
Sawdust bags all looking good- and other than the first pine that looks like I didn't mix well enough are colonizing just about equally.

Grain bag doesn't look good- has that powdery look- I really screwed up that grain run.

Jar looks ready to G2G with.

Tag-a-long on one clone plate. Will transfer away from it. Other one looking good yet not as fast oddly.

really interesting to see how it colonizes the two differently. Thinner but more coverage on the pine and denser colonies on the hardwood. They in the chamber now?

On a side note just tried to do some mushroom hunting and caught a bobcat sneaking up on me! Might have gotten him on my film camera we will have to see!

Forgot I had this image, here you go, as you can see they differ. Also wood has very limited nitrates, 0.1% on average.
+ 0.7% would give you roughly 50:1 as a ratio.

First second flush pins showed up on the 10lbs bag- in a new hole. So I went ahead and taped up the old holes and cut new ones on the opposite side.

All the Bratslavian bags had pins at the top near the filter patch (should have fruited yesterday or the day before but was busy with sterile work and work work) except for one pine but it had primordia. And the bag with the most invitro growth was actually the other pine. I cut holes and placed them all in the GH, staggered to offset potential microclimates with the GH. I taped over the filterpatches to try to stop top growth and hope it all pushes out the side holes I made. If I don't see pins quickly I'll chop the tops off and just top fruit. Not ideal but I've gotten good fruits like that in the past. Really should have fruited sooner, I think I'll reduce consolidation time to 3 days for future runs.

Alright both bags were fully colonized after only 5 days- one was spawned into 2 hardwood 20% bran and 2 pine 20% bran. Big spawn ratio. But for the other bag I spawned into 4 unsupplemented hardwood 4 unsupplemented pine and compare its colonization time to the 4 in Fruiting to see if I should stop spawning so heavily (probably).

All of my supplemented sterilized sawdust bags are showing green. Not sure what went wrong here as I've been doing grain bag to grain bag with no issues. Maybe PC time wasn't long enough.

I did it all in front of the flowhood- maybe I accidentally had a bit of the bag above the air stream. Thought I was careful not to do that. And there is a chance something got in in transferring to impulse dealer- but like I said all my grain spawn bags have turned out fine. And they go directly from spawn to impulse and then shake- really don't know what I did wrong. Oh well- I'll sit them outside see if I can still get some fruits. The only thing that sucks is it takes forever to sterilize sawdust bags with my AA921- only 2 bags fit at a time- 3 hour sterilization time, cool down time- Ug can't wait to build a 55 gal drum.

Super bummed to hear that TA. I have a few bags running with that same generation/batch of spawn I gave you. Will let you know if they turn funky. Here's a shot of one of the bags. I'm a little concerned about the yellowing around the grains, but the growth is very uniform so far. Time will tell.
inoculated 5/4 with 65g of grain spawn. The white discoloring in the center is masking tape residue.

Yeah I don't think it was the spawn- I'm thinking either PC times or something in my technique I messed up.
Rearranged to give the big clusters in the back more room to grow and a little cluster fell off.

Those are probably the best oyster clusters I've ever had!

Just harvested. Learned there are definitely micro climates inside the chamber, but similarly positioned bags performed similarly, whichever type of wood.
Pine:

Hardwood:

As you can see- the pine actually produced a little more weight than the hardwood, but only barely.

Nicelly done! I have a really hard time finding hardwood pellets up here in Sweden, as pine and spruce are the dominant wood types here. So the results you have are very positive for me. Big parts of of the hardwood forests up here are protected. But I have just stumbled across a place that deals with alder though, that is good enough for me as for now.

All the supplemented bags that had contamed now apear fine. Put two into Fruiting the other day and am putting the other two in today. Both were Pine so it seems to run a little faster supplemented than hardwood. Had some trouble with FAE- turns out a seal on my outtake broke dumping CO2 back into the room. It's fixed- a bit too late for this flush but I really like this cluster anyways.

Nice cluster! And good to read about positive experiments about growing on pine.
Also wondering how your bioluminescent grow went?

I've got a few jars unadjusted pH that are fully colonized going to be spawning hopefully soon.

Cool, I'll need to be more patient heh.
I've read something about letting it colonize in light or darkness, to get more glow on the outside of the substrate instead of hidden inside. Can't remember if it was light or dark, but might be worth checking into if you're also want to grow such a nightlight bottle or something.

Second supplemented pine block harvest. Really poor FAE for first few days of Fruiting before I corrected the problem and the caps started to fan out. Largest oyster to date- and 2 cups bran seems to have tripled yields.

Second flush starting for unsupplemented though measly- still a little short on FAE. And I put the majority of the next batch into Fruiting. 2 of the hardwood bags are not yet fully colonized and may be showing signs of contamination as they are super rhizomorphic.

My GreenHouse is pretty much at capacity! Really like this Bratslavian strain.

Yep still Bratslavian- I think this side by side of un/supplemented has proven to me that I have to get a 55gal drum steam sterilizer ASAP.

Second flush on unsupplemented Bratslavian was really light.
Hardwood:

Pine: (only one block harvested)

Supplemented Hardwood first pins:

Supplemented Pine Second Flush starting already:

Supplemented Pearl Third Flush coming in strong:

FAE troubles obviously- not horrible but I'm striving for perfect. My intake fan has started to slow due to the shitty water as I never followed my own advice and got a Brita and prefilter. Buying yet another new fan and will actually be smart this time.

Supplemented Hardwood first flush harvest

Supplemented Pine second flush pinning:

Supplemented Pine second flush harvest:
Pine is so much faster than hardwood supplemented! What is going on?!? More side by sides needed.
Second batch unsupplemented all pinning except one pine:

Supplemented 10lbs Pearl 3rd flush harvest:

Loving the Bratslavian, and if these side by sides have shown me anything it's that unsupplemented is for the birds. I may do a couple more side by sides just to be able to quantifiably prove the benefits of supplementation, but the very next thing I do will be to build a drum sterilizer so I can kiss these low yields goodbye.

I wish I had a friend on here, that lived close by that I could share stuff with and hang out with. Super jelly.
So, now that you've done a bunch of tests, would you say that supplemented pine performs better then unsupplemented?
Also, would you mind taking some pics of the pellets and bran you use? I'm more of a visual person, if you don't mind please!
These are beauties, I'm hoping my golds perform as well.
Also, did you pasteurize? Or sterilize? Are you familiar with the bucket tek, used for hydrating coir for cubes? Think that would work for hydrating the wood before spawning?

Supplementation has consistently tripled my yeild for oysters both on pine and hardwood. I use wheat bran to supplement (2cups per 5lbs bag). When you supplement you must sterilize. If you are just doing straight Pellets, follow Lipa's Pasteurized Fuel Pellet Tek - this is also the recipe I use for supplementation but I add about 3/4 cup of water to offset the bran and I do cold water so I can mix the bran up by hand.
And honestly, throw out the cube Cultivation book while doing edibles- they are very different beasts.

Alrighty. I'm going to have to do more reading it seems lol Would you find wheat bran in a grocery store? And could I sterilize it in jars? Then spawn it in open air to a bucket? Thanks for the help!

Look for wheat bran in the bulk section and if you really get going, a feed store. If you are spawning in open air just stick to pasteurization and no supplements or else you will invite a lot of contams. You can spawn heavier, 5 to 10% wet spawn to wet sub to get better yields.
Since you're just ge trying started, keep it simple and don't go off trying experimemtal techniques.

Sounds good to me! I'll use a higher spawn to sub ratio to make up for not supplementing. I'll need a FH, and/or spawn bags to start with supplementing I guess hey.
Guess it's unsupplemented pellets for the first go around. I think I'm going to look for some hardwood ones tho, since I also plan on fruiting some bioluminescent mushies soon as well.
So much work to do tomorrow! Stoked.

I get wheat bran for $8 for 50lbs from my local feed store- pretty sure all of them will have it. And no if you sterilize in jars then open air spawn you'll get contams. If you're set on using buckets but want to supplement you may be able to mix the bran in with the grain, sterilize, colonize, then spawn- though that may be really hard to break up and wouldn't be evenly distributed. You could make one big bag of sub for the bucket and PC it if you have a large enough one and then sterile spawn into it.

Yeah I'm going to need some bags it seems. And probably a FH before I go messing with supplements. I'll just add more spawn until I get the hang of things.
