I've never used 2.5 agar in this recipe. I always use 2.0 max. Usually 1.9. Try that. Your agar is likely too hard.

Ive tried this like 5 times now without success.

1. For some reason this recipe is only making me 5 plates?

2. Nothing seems to grow on them. Ive tried tissue samples and drop of LC and neither showed any visible changes

Any help? Sure would hate for this big ass bag of oats to go to waste.

Why would oats be going to waste if this is a thread about agar? If you're only able to make 5 plates, it sounds like too much liquid is evaporating and it's becoming extremely stiff/denser than optimal.  A good trick is to follow the recipe here by Munchauzen and for that recipe specifically notice he says "Upon boiling, immediately remove and pour into a measuring cup. You can use the the cup to see how close to 1/2 cup you are. if you cooked off too much water, you can simply add some back in."

Thanks for the link ill have to try that recipe here in a minute. I was saying my oats were going to sit around unused since Ive been unable to get ny AGAR to colonize

I am just finding out this tek and I am super excited to try it out.  Just bought 12 glad rounds.  My question is I don't have a 1/4 drill bit.  I have 5/32 is my biggest.  Is that hole in the top good enough so the containers don't crush in the pc?

it'll work, I use a 10mm titanium dab nail, anything to let air in and out

I always open them upside down with two hands, a few drops of water come out, so thats cool I guess although someone else to not give a shit about condensation, so I just ignore it so far no problems

after about 3 runs through the sterilizer they are loose enough to just one hand them, althogh i kinda like them tight fitting, I had one open accidentally, oddly shows no sign of contam

I want to share 2 tricks.

First, you can make the holes on the sides close up to the lid, this way you won't need foil or paper towels to pc them. The tape doesn't get wet this way.

Second, instead of drilling holes, I use a little flat head screwdriver, flame it till red hot and I can make like 30 slots quick and easy before I have to flame it again.

I don't know the science, all I know is that it works. Try it and you'll see.

also to deal with condensation just finger flick the edges of the minirounds rather hard with your finger.
it will pool the water and it will clear up within 24hours. super useful.

I have done it from the side like that and the OP was long ago edited with my findings. It may appeal to some people to do it this way. Personally I find it a pain to label and the tape still gets soaked so you need to be careful handling it until it dries. But you don't need the paper towel or foil if you do it like that.

Maybe it's the way I do it, I keep the plates like three inches from the water. They come out of the pc slightly moist, not wet at all. Sorry, didn't realize you updated the op. I just read someone some time ago that did it and tried it myself, can't go back.

It works, that's why I included it in the OP. Just not my preference.

I don't see why you can't do the original method without the towel and foil... if the tape gets wet anyway then why bother with the hassle
