i have a cake and there's a spot that might be a contam or might just be substrate on the jar. If it is a contam it hasn't spread at all. the jar has been colonizing for almost 2 weeks. It's behind my other jars but it's doing okay. I saw another similar spot on the cake a few days ago but it has since disappeared and the myc isn't discolored or anything.
anyways if it is a contam and isn't spreading and the myc takes over it will it still be safe to fruit? It's not a funky color it just seems like darker substrate.
Bacteria will sometimes be overtaken by the substrate and future fruitings should be fine. Mold can also be overtaken, however spores from the mold can germinate at a later time, or the mold can spread to the inside the cake where it can not be seen.
Just keep your eye on the possible contamination. Usually you can tell with time what is going on. At this time it sounds like you made a sound judgement.
