Finally found chaga.... 2

Been hunting for chaga for around six month now, walking through birch woods finding burl after burl (was starting to think it didn't grow in the uk). Well I finally found it.... 20 yards from where I live! Can actually see it from my livingroom window and I've been walking past it every time I've went out foraging. What is it they say 'Cant see the forest for the trees' That's my bungalow behind it lol. Right under my nose all this time. Made some fantastic tea with it, practically cleared an infection up over night! Thinking of only cutting off small bits when needed. Will that be best for the health of the tree and fungi? Also, there was a bit that fell off (maybe caused by winds?) Could this be used to impregnate the other birch in the area? As I'm not sure of its 'edibility/drinkability'. Also been wondering if it competes with the birch polypore as I've not had a hint of it in the birch woods.

That Chaga seems aged, typically the interior is a bright orange and yellow marbled colour. Contrary to what many are saying, it isnt any more beneficial to take pieces as you need them, youll continue to stress out the tree and the chaga fungi. Youre better to take what youre going to take and leave the tree and chaga to heal for several years. Normally I would only harvest chaga in areas where it is common, as taking it from a forest where it is not found abundantly, will surely impact the genetic diversity and environment where it was taken. Chaga is best harvested in the winter, before the sap runs, when the tree and chaga are both dormant. Collecting it in warmer months is presumed to have a negative impact on the tree, but there is still so much to learn about this incredible parasitic fungi.
