No I live a bit too far north to get redfish. I have fished in redfish waters but never caught them. Like I said, most my ocean fishing has not been awfully profitable.

We do get red rockfish up here though. They aren't often real big, but they can be, and are better eating than most of what I've caught.

Been thinking about heading over to one of the rivers that let out into the Chesapeake here soon to help them with their blue catfish problem.
I generally stopped fishing because I feel bad for the fish. Even for catch and release cuz I tend to accidentally murder the little ones trying to get the hook out. But there is no reason to worry about a fish and its health if it's an invasive species that is destroying an ecosystem.

Fried catfish is yummy too :sadyes:

Most fish can be released if you fish with lures, because you hook 'em in the mouth.  I try not to fish with bait for anything i'm not planning to eat (so hardly ever).  Blues are tasty, and they get big.  They will take live bait too, so you can target them that way.  I have a small flathead in my 55gal aquarium.  he was just a baby when i caught him.  He was mixed in with a bunch of small bullheads.  I dunno what i'll do with him when he outgrows the tank.  Eat him i guess, because now he's been exposed to aquarium parasites etc. that i wouldn't want to introduce to the local waters.

If you have the space you could build an outdoor pond for him. I have a neighbor that has massive koy fish in a 5ft pond. I know it's 5 feet because I fell in it once and it came up to my neck (I'm 5'5") was about 9 feet long and 4 feet wide. All you need is a pump or a fountain to keep water moving. I'd consider getting an algea eater too.

Use circle hooks if you're gonna  baitfish....always gets them in the mouth. The Chesapeake bay has had bull sharks come as far north as the Bay Bridge. a Buddy of mine got into a school of dolphins at the mouth of the Chester river last week....said one did a flip right next to his boat. I have never heard of them coming up that far into the bay before. Pretty crazy.

What side of the bay do you reside on Cookie? Eastern or Western?

QFT.

I catch and release, and even though i almost always use plastics, if i happen to be using bait, i use circle hooks.

I live on the mainland.

The most common sharks to swim into the bay are sandbar sharks. They get up to 8ft. The bull sharks that come into the area, the big ones at least, are likely pregnant females looking for a good place in the shallows for their babies.

Only sharks I've ever seen or heard of being caught in the bay are babies or young jouvies, with the bigged being just under 3ft. So I'm imagining the species that actually do swim up into the bay are most often coming in to give birth.

I'd love to see them, but I'd feel bad about hooking them.

I have no idea what a circle hook looks like. My issue is simply getting the hook out. I've almost accidentally ripped their lips off before. Have torn their poor fish lips before  If it gets caught deep in the gills or down the throat I prefer to cut it. I've never gotten a hook out of a fishes throat unless it was already almost out. I dunno why that's such an issue with me. Took a long time to master baiting the hook too. I guess I'll blame my disgraphia or general lack of coordination. It used to be the inability to control the pressure in my hands. When I was young I crushed little fish by accident

I like catching sandbar sharks during spring on the Texas coast. They migrate here from the north east Atlantic Coast to have babies.  Keeping them is prohibited.  I'm very careful to work quickly and carefully for the sake of the shark.  I'll put a small tag on them that I get from a oceanic fisheries research foundation to help with migration, growth, etc. I will also sometimes take a very small clipping of a fun for their DNA research.  I've never had one die on me.

I'll try to 'horse' them in and not play them to the point of exhaustion.  Even with the largest ones I've caught 7'2"-7'7" I was able to get them fast enough for them to swim off strong.  My girlfriend caught a 6'10" on one of my bullred/smaller shark reels.  Took her over an hour because it was foul hooked in the fin.  We didn't tag that one because I wanted it to get it back in the water asap, I stayed with it in waist deep water until it swam off strong.

Circle hooks are the way to go. To get the most out of the circle hook design it's best to snell them. Since I've started to snell the ratio of landed fish has gone up as well as perfect corner of the jaw hook placement.

I'm ready for the bullred fish run.  If I remember I'll post a tutorial on how I make my leaders.  I make them heavy duty since they are not leader shy (the water is brown most of the time), might hook a shark, they last forever, and the redfish are big.

I have a co-worker from Florida, and he's strictly geared up for sharks.  It' s the weirdest thing to me.  We have sportfish on this coast.  I offered to take him out for Kelp bass and whatnot, but he doesn't have a reel smaller than a 6-0.  Where's the fun in that?

I'm dumb. I know what a circle hook is. I've used them before, though they haven't been my preferred hook just cuz they're a little harder to bait without poking myself.

If it's better for the fish though that's what I'll use

How do I know what size I should be using, say for medium size bass or catfish?

#2 probably. maybe bigger depending on what you're using for bait.

If you use lures instead of bait, you won't have to bother with circle hooks for bass because you'll get bit on the retrieve and hook in the mouth anyway.  I fish with swimbaits almost exclusively these days.  Super versatile.  Great for fresh or saltwater bass, and I can catch a halibut or a yellowtail, or pretty much anything that will eat a live bait, too.
I pretty much only ever use circle hooks for catfishing.

I fish for everything from trout to marlin.  Different folks different strokes.  It's fun when your hooked up to a fish for hours but it's also fin finesse fishing for picky eaters where stealth is required. Ultimately trolling for bills during the day and tossing poppers for tuna at night is my favorite. But I enjoy it all.
Ill use a #1, 1/0, and 2/0 circle for bait fish like whiting or live baiting shrimp for trout but have landed 44" redfish on them.  As the baits and fish get bigger I up the hook size. Just make sure to power snell them. They hook better.

What are yalls favorite reels? I have some modern 2 speeds(shimano, avet, penn) but find that my old pro gear albacore special is ultimately my favorite all around reel.  Can cast large plugs/poppers, jig spoons, live bait with it depending on which rod I mount it on.  It's loaded with momoi diamond  80# braid and depending in what I'm doing topshotted with fluorocarbon or heavier braid
