What causes short fat mushrooms?
    #2413797 - 03/10/04 07:56 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I thought some people were having trouble with this with the Koh Samui strain, but Ive seen it with others.

So far with my friends Koh Samui on PK cakes, about 5 pins showed up and all of the stems of the pins are way fatter and rounder than the cap. They look like like litte fat kids, and this is the first day they have come up.

Is there any indication of what causes this, besides strain?

~thanks~

are you talking about fatasses? if so, you need to provide more air exchange. that will solve it.

yeah... and to little light. Light fives them a growing direction, no light and they get fat and weird. I love 'em that way though!

This guy I know generally has fat pins and thinks that it's just because they are getting plenty of water.

its because of lack of air exchange. there is a build up of CO2.

water is not an issue and light will not affect them in that way. light can(but not always) make them grow all sideways and weird but never fatasses.  Water would only increase the moushrooms growth(but usually in proportion) and not in a fatass sytle.

I personally love the fatasses more.

True, nothing wrong with a good fatass . I guess I just meant that fat pins can be caused by (a) high moisture content(s) (as with casings/cake sub).

I was under the impression that surplus CO2 causes long skinny stems, not short fat ones

How very wrong! Mushroom fruits that have fruited in a high co2 environment are always tall, thin and spindly. High Co2 will never cause fatarses - quite the opposite. The prime cause is the genetics of the spore match - some spore races will do it much more than others - high humidity can be another cause - but air exchange has nothing to do with fat arses...
