I recommend putting the holes a bit wider than you think is needed. Ergonomically it is easier to work if the holes are well spaced apart.

Looks like the genetics is changing as the myc gets older. For the better. It looks much better than before, almost as if it was getting more specialized for using wood as a substrate. It literally looks wiser to me now.
