Should I turn myself in?

I'm having a problem. I guess I never realized how quickly traffic tickets (and thus, warrants) can add up. I have over $3000 in fees for the warrants. And I can't pay it.
I was thinking that maybe I should turn myself in to do some time and get them erased since I can't pay them. Should I do that? I don't want these warrants following me around forever and I simply cannot pay them. I mean, I might get thrown in jail anyway for having them, so why not turn myself in?
I'm so frustrated, so I'm wondering if just doing some time for them might be the best idea.
Any advice?

I say turn yourself in. It's better to just do a little time, than to get pulled over some time when it might be very inconvenient to go to jail(like if you had drugs on you, or had somewhere that you really had to be).

yea that would make it really worse...depends how much time you would have to serve if you turned yourself in, which i'm guessing you don't know. if you turn yourself in say you are cause you don't want them but can't afford it and just do some time or something...i dont kinda sticky situation.

Could I call the cops or the courts to ask how much time I would have to serve, or should I get a lawyer? I know it was fucked up of me to accumalate so many warrants (it was a couple of years ago) but now that they've caught up with me I'm so stressed out. I wonder how long I would have to be in the jail.
At least I learned my lesson.

yea it's tough to go in court and be like if i don't pay how much jail time is it and then just walk out...i just don't see that happening. That really sucks for you though, and i'm sure you didn't need me to tell you. Hopefully I can cheer you up-

thanks man.
I just emailed the police department (thought it was safest) asking hypothetically if I had a friend in this situation, what should they do? I asked them in the email how much jail time it would be if *she* turned herself in, etc.
Someone else told me that if I served jailtime it would be at most a week. I could handle that, I think. A week of jailtime vs. thousands of dollars in fees? I'll take the cell, thank you.
But I won't know until I either get an email back from the police, call a lawyer, or talk to someone in the court system. I know I shouldn't be so stressed (I haven't been caught yet, afterall) but I've never been to jail before so I'm a little worried.

emailing, never thought of that. nice touch with the she part. and a week wouldn't be bad. It's just a sample of jail. But like you said you won't know until they get back to you. Watch them say like "come to court and we will tell you" I could at least see the police around me doing that. In fact i gotta go to court in like 20 days.

Yeah, see I was hoping I could hold out until I move to Canada. But will the tickets follow me up there? And will I even be able to move up there without a valid drivers license? (it was suspended because the warrants)

The courts in the US usually will work out payment plans, and often reduce the amount of the fines, if you show up in court. Most of the time they will take a smaller amount of money too. If they put you in a cell it cost money. I know this to be a fact in some states. I have a friend who has owed large amounts to several states and has gotten the fines reduced, and had the warrants withdrawn. Be prepared for possible licence suspension. Putting your head in the sand or running away does not help long term, my brother had a ticket in Maine 20 years ago, and when he went to renew his licence in another state recently he had to pay the fine.

Yeah, you can even pay as little as like $5 a month on these fines.

Even if the warrants are over three years old? And I never showed up for my court dates. I know I fucked up.
Thanks for the replies and the help though, guys.
