I add 1/4" alfalfa pellets to my spawn before I layer spawn into straw bags. i mix them dry into the spawn after breaking up the bag. As i layer I add both spawn and alfalfa together (handful per layer). The do just fine. Bags come together in 10-12 days and fruit on day17-21. I guess you could just over wet the sawdust a little and add the pellets with spawn after pasteurizing the bags. I have used beet pulp before in sterilized bags as well like hassing said. Works good.

20 foot container, back framed/insulated with some galvanized sheet metal over it...I found metal roofing works better on my other one. Has its own pump, pressure tank, electrical box...Plug and play.
