definitely do your best to find 1/2 pints.

full pints take longer to colonize, which can lead
to more chance for contams to take a foothold.

it never hurts to use more innoculant, especially
when using more substrate.

good luck.

I'm considering putting the project on hold until I can find the half pint jars. The one thing I'm worried about though is waiting too long. The end of the semester is only about 2 months away, and I need to make sure these babies are done before them. This makes the half pints even more appealing, but I won't be able to get them until after Spring Break (a 1.5 week delay) Sadly, I don't think I'll be able to get more than one harvest from the cakes when they grow... I've read about great variations in the total time it takes to finish a grow. How likely is it that I'll be fine?

Hm... could one just use a half pint's worth of substrate in a pint jar?

Just started my pints jars abt 2 weeks ago.
The 1/2 pints are almost done but the pints will need another week.
Put 4 cc's in each jar.
This is my 2 nd grow. Will use pints to make cakes.
Good Luck

pints take forever. and yes. contams do hit them over that longer time period. go to where you bough the pint jars, and ask for widemouth half pints. they'll order them for ya no problem, and it should take at most a week to get em. took me 3 days to get em on special order.

First off, I'd just like to say thanks for sharing the insight/experience.

As for returning the jars and ordering the 1/2 pints, I think I just might, although I'm not sure if Safeway takes special orders.

I still need vermiculite though (the hardware store was out) so I need to make a trip to Fred Meyer anyway. I'll check for supplies there, then let everyone know if they have them.

Once everything get's straightened out and I begin the project, I'll post a photojournal. I'd love to get more feedback regarding the grow.

Hi I also had a question about 1 pint jars,
i bought them by kind of mistake but decided to keep them.
i just did 12 1/2 pint jars wich are all colonizing and i wanted to make 12 bigger cake with the pint jar, using a liquid cultur more cc of his stuf and mybe some shakable jars.
i wanted to know how long to boil/steam them? thye are bigger so it should be longer right?
and last question, how long do you think they will take to colonize in my situation and a good war temperature? apprx?
thanks in advance.

I was shopping for some groceries the other day and as i was walking by the pickle jar section i had an idea. What if one were to use an empty pickle jar for a pf jar? It looks like a lil bit more than 1 pint, but theres no reason that wouldnt work right?

4 ccs is way too much, i use about 1 cc per jar, quarter a cc per hole. All that is needed and mine are growing fine. Spores are precious dont waste them.

If you put a quarter cc per hole in a pint jar, it will take forever to colonize. When knocking up pints, I use spore solution liberally. I would rather use more spores and get faster colonization that have the jars take longer and risk contamination. The most I've used is 1 cc per hole, innoculating 5 holes per pint (four outter, one in the center [center hole is crucial for all jars, imo]).

Use whatever you can, but IMO, more is definitely better than less. You could just double the recommend amount for half-pints. That's what I did in my last grow, but it's taking considerably longer than when I split a syringe into two pints.

Ive used pints with no probs, just make sure the verm is sterilized and you should be contam free. With other cleanliness of course

mix verm and water together til you get a little above field moisture.

then microwave for 10 mins.

YourMomIsOnFire - I would reccomend putting polyfill filters on those pints and filling them about halfway up with brf/verm. That way if you leave off the pf "dry verm layer" you'll have plenty of airspace in the jar to allow breaking and shaking of the cakes. Shake those babies up a few times during colonization and they should be done in a few weeks.

you pose a good question salazare. if you're sterile enough, you can lift the lid to penetrate deeper. or you can skip the verm barrier layer entirely and hope for the best. then just let the syringe drip onto the top of the cake. it'll work, albeit slowly. as for boiling them, i would do it twice as long since its twice as big, and since you plan to boil. if you pressure cook, its a matter of how long to cook, as well as a variable of how much psi, which alters the times. as far as boiling goes, i suppose just doubling the time would be sufficient, it shouldnt dry out anything too severely, if at all...hell, im not sure, never boiled. =/

as for how long it takes, one would think twice as long as a half pint, but my dog finds it to be more like 1.5 times as long, e.g. 1 month in a 1/2 pint, 1 month, 2 weeks for pint. then again, he didnt pack the pint all the way to the top either. i ramble too much, hope your question was answered, feel free to ask more specifically if im not comprehending appropriately.

Im doing my first grow using pints instead of 1/2 pints. I was worried about my spores not making it all the way into the cakes themselves. But this morning I looked and my jars are starting to colonize now. I innoculated on the 24th as well. peace, one love.

I say just forget the dry verm barrier and use a polyfill filter on the lid (thats the way I always did the pf tek, and it works great. low contam rates and very fast colonizing). the polyfill keeps out contams while allowing gas exchange, and you can shake up the jar during colonization. With shaking and polyfill you shouldn't have to wait more than 2 weeks. The half pint "shakeable jars" I had been using with that tek colonize in about a week.
