learning to jam (keyboard)
    #2411926 - 03/09/04 08:31 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I am in a situation where I need to improve my ability to improvise and play along to given chords. I'm pretty good with C and F and G and ok with some of the others, but it sounds a little unsophisticated. I was just wondering if there are any musicians who can give me some specific tips on how best to improve jamming skills besides to just practice more.

well i dont play piano, but id say you hit the nail on the head there...practice.

arpeggios are always good, (once again, major guitar thing)
learn your scales and modes, etc -- gives you more ideas.

yeah i'd say practice arpeggios a lot, thats what helped me with guitar. and yeah you can use them on piano too, it's basically when you play each individual note in a chord rather than all at once. it doesn't have to be in any particular order, just mess around and it sounds good. at least on guitar..

i know nothing about piano but would love to learn someday. it's the god of all instruments.

Scales, modes, chords, extensions, arpeggios.... the keys to knowing key centers and the chords that expand off of it.
Such as C major and the dominant G and subdom. F.
also, pick up some fake books (books not actually written by author of songs) of styles you want to play and practice those- it'll at least give you ideas of patterns in other keys.
good luck man, Piano IS music theory in an instrument.
