I am scared to do a Print/syring!
    #829024 - 08/19/02 07:07 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I don't know why but i keep thinking i am gonna have trouble making a sterile print and syring. I have grown the mushrooms, they should be done by this friday, but i am worried that i will not be able to make a sterile print and syring. What is the best method to work for you guys, for printing and syringe making?

I have printed more the 10 teks on this but can't pick one.

So i need input.

thanks ff7

This is what I do. I harvest a mushroom, and remove the cap from the stem with a clean scalpel. I sterilize some foil and place it on a clean, hard surface that has been sprayed with Lysol. I then place the cap on the sterilized foil and cover it with a clean bowl that has been wiped with alcohol. Let the cap print overnight. The next morning, spray the area with lysol and remove the cap. Take the foil and quickly fold it up and over itself to seal. Voila! Clean print.

When I make a syringe, I fill up a 1/8 pint canning jar with the amount of water that I need. The lid of this jar has been modified with a hole in the center. I usually make this about 1/4" or so. Cover the hole with masking tape, and cover the entire top with foil. I then PC for 30 minutes and allow the jar to cool. When the jar is cool, I turn the oven on low and pull out the lowest tray to use as a work surface. Wipe the jar with alcohol and remove the foil from the jar. Open the lid and scrape the spores from the print into the jar -- for most prints, an area the size of a match head works well for each syringe. Be sure and do this as quickly as possible. Put the lid back on and remove the masking tape. Stick a syringe into the hole and fill it. Squirt the water back in as soon as it's filled and repeat a few times. This breaks up the spores and distributes it evenly into the water. Fill syringes and replace cover on the needle. Slap a piece of tape on it and record the strain and date.

Good luck! (This was my 666th post. )

I like what Mickey had to say.... mine's just slightly different, but it sounds like he found a good way to cut some lengthy corners in sterilization, so I say go for it. Cultivating mushrooms is really a learn as you go kind of thing anyway. If you fail, deduce the problem and attack it again. I have faith in you

Let your print dry for 24 hours before you seal it up.

its very annoying recieving a print that the spores are stuck together in a sheet and from huge clumps in a syringe. plus nasty things can happen to a wet print.

haha don't be scared. In the beginning I had to start off from a print and make my own spore syringe. Anyway, i was sure it was gonna be a failure, but everything worked out fine. . Want some advice? Use a glovebox/still air box.

And do listen to this. I've ruined quite a few prints this way. Luckily I have a lot to work with still.

Easiest way that worked for me is take some clean forceps and scissors, cut cap of mushroom place in small sterile jar (just bake empty jar 350 - 40 min or less) and allow it to make a spore print at the bottom (24 hrs later) take the cap out and add filtered water carefully then close and shake and you have your own spore water - this tech saved me hundreds of bucks

I use Multisync's tek personally, I find it to be pretty simple, and I have not had any contam errors (except one with cobweb due to improper inoculation. Just a bag and some scissors is all that's required.

I've spent the past few days looking at various syringe teks for my first attempt, which I'm gradually building up the confidence for. (Shouldn't be much longer now!) I found it very useful. It's going into a pot in my head with a few other selected teks where it will be mixed, digested and hopefully come out as my own successful new tek.

So... Thanks again!

lol! day of the dead.
so, you've never gown before, but your gonna look over some grows then not follow any, instead you'll mix em up and come up with a new way of doing things? pretty bold for your first grow. if past noobish failures are any indication, you'll be sailing away.

He didn't say he's never grown before.. I took it to mean his first attempt at making a syringe. I give him a D+ for communication, but I think he's saying he's going to take the best of various teks and find a method that works best for him.

o. my bad.
i didn't realize there was more than 1 way to make a syringe properly.
boil H2O for 10 minutes, suck up H2O into syringe and purge 3-5 or so times, fill with boiling H2O and let sit for 10 minutes. purge. i fill and purge a few more times, then fill one final time, then let it cool.
i could do it in my sleep. works every time.
