There are no reliable statistics re: mental illness prior to psychiatry.
IMO, the prevalence of mental illness in American society isn't thanks to psychiatry, it's thanks to the downright Babylonian scale of pure evil embedded in our culture and conditioning.

there's such thing as mental illness, but to say it's all biological is a load of shit.
your brain is constantly being changed by every thought you have, memory you have, and in response to everything in the environment. this is why therapy can be so beneficial.
also even if you are genetically disposed to having something, again, your genes are constantly being turned on and off in response to the environment.

I don't know. I have a lot of theories, some of them more popular than others. I would say "Christian love" if not for the fact that that cure is worse than the disease in this country.
That said, I suspect we give neurotransmitters too much credit for the propagation of demons.

Real CA Milk said: Kind of my play on "Bipolar disorder is a myth" thread, I have now reached the conclusion that ALL mental illness......is a lie
NO! Only the cake is a lie! D<
Anyways, in all seriousness, mental illness is a very real thing. Are things like bipolar or ADHD misdiagnosed or over diagnosed? Absolutely. Is it because big pharma wants to make big bucks? Of course! That does not mean somebody with a serious real problem doesn't deserve some sort of treatment. Environmental factors are a HUGE part of things manifesting themselves, especially if you have a hereditary risk of such things occurring. As for your examples, I read the first one before I gave up. That girl was clearly suffering from PTSD, and it had gotten really bad, OR she had some sort of suppressed memories that evolved over time, influenced by environmental factors etc.
Point is, psychology, even understanding the human brain and all the chemicals that work together to even just create emotional reactions and our personalities and preferences etc, is not easy to understand. Therefor, it's not like you can just go around saying "this doesn't exist" when there is legitimate medical proof that mentally things occur in people and while some of them aren't as serious as the others or are just doing it for attention (that in itself is a whole other ball game), that doesn't mean people don't have problems. There is a difference between a mental illness, and life problems.
Personally, I was diagnosed with bipolar, and while yes I feel mood swingy sometimes, it's clear to me that it's not something I really need to worry about. I've had major depression, that was largely influenced by environmental factors, and with time and not always medication, I got better. Am I better because of medication? Absolutely not. The main part of treating a mental illness is therapy. DBT and other types of therapy are essential parts of a person's treatment.
I wish they would teach the things I've learned in therapy, like assertiveness skills etc, in health class at school. Maybe we all wouldn't be at such a risk for such things occuring if we did't go around being fucktards about how we communicate and act. We can definitely improve our mental well being by keeping ourselves in good health, having open and honest communication in the relationships we chose to have, and staying grounded. Meditation, yoga, and basic therapy are all great things to help destress. Keeping a journal is a great way to not have to go to a therapist.
*psychology major*

And yes. Big pharma sucks. I have lyme disease and they don't always approve my medication refills. So trust me, I'm not arguing in their favor. XD;
--------------------
BEWARE THE LYME CARRIERS ALWAYS CHECK YOUR CLOTHES AFTER A HIKE, 1 IN 4 TICKS CARRIES LYME DISEASE AND OTHER VECTOR BORNE ILLNESSES. IF BITTEN, REMOVE TICK WITHOUT SQUEEZING THE BODY, SAVE IT IN A BAG, AND GET TESTED. THE SOONER YOU TREAT LYME, THE LESS SEVERE IT IS.
