Help - What's wrong with my casing?
    #2411567 - 03/09/04 05:16 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Timeline:

Feb 21 - Spawned pasteurized straw/dung with colonized finch seed.
Feb 28 - Straw/dung fully colonized. Cased with pasteurized 50/50 peat moss & vermiculite, plus crushed limestone 1:5 ratio on peat moss, 1" depth.
Mar 09 - 10 days since cased and casing layer is showing just a few growing pins.

I guess my question is:

1. What affects the colonization speed of the casing layer?
2. Should I be worried since I only see a few young shrooms growing?

Please Advise.

Was the casing layer ready for light when it was exposed to it? also a 1 inch casing layer is huge. I general hover between 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch.

I used a Rubbermaid bin that I assumed was opaque because you could not see through the bin, but turns out it is just slightly translucent. How much does light affect colonization of the casing layer? As for the 1" depth, it was based on the substrate depth of 4" (is that not the proper ratio?). Comments please. Thanks.

not so much, but it will initiate pinning, hence an un even pin set. you do not want to use a translucent fruiting tray. light from the outside can cause muchrooms to grow on the sides, well below the casing layer. as for the right ratio of 1/4 casing/substrate. I dont put to much stock in that. 1/4 inch casing is fine for even a 4 inch deep substrate. It's only there to hold in water, you can always spray it later to replintish it's supply. with less casing it takes less time for growth to run though the casing. also casing is not nutritional, so all the nutrients spent to collinize it is drained from the substrate.

I got the 1:4 depth ratio of casing to substrate from Paul Stamets and J.S.Chilton The Mushroom Cultivator:

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23441

"To gain the full benefits of a casing layer, an absolute minimum depth on bulk substrates is one inch. For fruiting on sterilized grain, the casing need not be as deep as for fruiting on bulk substrates. Shallow layers of grain are commonly cased 3/4 to 1 inch deep."
