    #2411541 - 03/09/04 04:49 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

my casing has been taking a while to pin. i have been trying to get it to pin for 1 week 1 day. ive got 2-3 patches of really hard mycelium, which i assume is overlay. should i scratch and patch? im not really sure what to do.

thanks

overlay is overused.

is it hard and leathery?

did it try out?

if so, then it's probably overlay.

if not, it should still be salvagable.

keep the humidity at decent levels and
your air exchange high. lots of oxygen
means lots of pinning.

plus, 8 days isn't very long unless you
know this strain's growth characteristics.

yeah, it was quite hard. water would stick to the top of it.

here is what i did:

well, after looking over the casing, i noticed that there were 2-3 hard patches of mycelium on the top (i think its overlay). i took a sterile razor blade and scrapped these two spots off. i did not tear into the casing at all.

they looked kinda like this with only one little spot that attached to the casing surface.

|----------------------|
-|--------| | -----------|----

i think i was starting to get overlay in other areas- all the mycelium on top seems all balled up and hard. i cut about 1/2 of it off and placed a cm of casing material back on top of every spot.

question- did i just completely mess up my casing? its been 1 week and 1 day since i have tried to get it to fruit.

thanks

still not very long.

quit fucking with it, dude.

leave it somewhere humid, with moderate
light and as much fresh air as you can give
it without killing the humidity.

these things can take weeks to get going if
you don't have your setup tuned.

how should i prevent the overlay from happening again? i fan the casing three times a day, its under light 12-16 hours, and i mist the casing/sides once every other day? why is the mycelium dying on the top? what should i do differently?

Is the alleged overlay present when you stick it in the chamber after incubating? You can always fruit it sooner.

I've seen overlay occur when there's been
either excessive drying or excessive moisture.

if you're fanning too much and dropping the
humidity, you can dry out the top layer of
the casing, creating a hard, leathery top layer.

if you're spraying too much and allowing water
to pool on the surface you will see a similar
reaction.

overlay will occur when all conditions are right except for the temp being too high. a temp drop is necessary to induce fruiting.

let's say you've been incubating at 75F. let's say you decide it's time for the little buggers to fruit and you stick 'em in your terrarium but with the light on in there it stays at ~75F. guess what you get? you got it! overlay!
