The mycelium is somewhat related to humans. It breaths in oxygen and breaths out carbon like we do. If the carbon becomes too concentrated it'll stop growing.
During colonization you want a relatively high carbon content (but not TOO much) so you need to provide gas-exchange.
Once it's finished colonizing, it's going to need fresh air to stimulate the fruiting phase.
If you leave the lids covered in foil they'll eventually stall out once the carbon builds up enough.

point being man: you need gas exchange for jars and colonizing bulk substrates. If too much c02 builds up your jars will stall. it needs a way to excape. if using the pftek- you will need to remove the foil exposing the holes in the lid.the dry verm layer is your filter! there isnt really any point in having selfseeling inoculation ports on pftek jars. if using grain -it comes in really handy! you can do pftek jars using a grain lid im sure. but its sorta pointless. point being your dry verm layer is a good filter and any extra filtering just slows colonization. My advice to anyone new is : follow a tek to the smallest detail. and use the pftek on this site : www.mushroomvideos.com - visit the site and watch all the videos - you may just learn something.

Wow...I feel real dumb, that would explain why my jars stall out when colonizing but do eventually get there. Hmm wow thanks...Gah I'm silly. I got my entire growing tek from Roadkill's vids on youtube so I missed the part that says take the foil off...

dont be overly hard on yerself - you are learning. you will see the big picture soon: the only way you fail is if you give up! failing and quickly starting over with new knowledge is perserverance!
