Coconut water agar
    #24111384 - 02/22/17 04:22 PM (7 years, 10 months ago)

I have searched and cant find much info on coconut water agar. Does anyone use coconut water? Is it possible? Seems very nutritious.

Hmm.

I have no experience whatsoever with this, but i dont see why it wouldnt work.

Though if you wanted to use a sugar based agar it wouls probably be a major disadvantage to use coconut water bwcausw of the cost.

Also if its overly nutritious it would be a bacterial breeding ground if your sterile technique wasnt perfect.

Eager to see what other peope contribute

i don't think coconut water would add anything that you can't get from more affordable sources but it never hurts to experiment. you would have to try it in conjunction with some other more traditional agar recipes to get any kind of definable results though.

I've been thinking lately that it would be handy to have ready to go beverages that could be used for making agar or LC
This might be a good one to try.  Maybe white grape juice would also work?

You definitely want to dilute the coconut water, keep that in mind.  Check the nutritional information info on the label and do the math so that you have 3 to 4 grams of sugar per 100ml liquid after adding water.

Another idea I had was using dealcoholized beer to make LC or agar.  The sugar to liquid ratio is pretty much spot on in most dealcoholized beer so in theory it would be ready to go right from the can.  I've got two cans ready to try this next time I cook up agar.

Having these easy go to recipes just makes it a lot easier to create a variety of agar media, so that you can alternate food sources for the mycelium.

The recipe on that page is terrible for growing mycelium. The sugar content is  0.05% which is extremely low compared to the usual 4% and the agar to water ratio is about 1/10th what we typically use for pouring plates... so it's going be a liquidy runny mess
Coconut Agar

CN

H2O

500 mL

Agar

1 g

Coconut milk/juice

10 g

If we are talking unsweetened coconut water, then I would actually use undiluted, I said to dilute it earlier, but then I just looked up the nutrient content and it's actually quite low in sugar.  But it does have 0.7grams of protein so it's going to work quite well I'm sure.

Yea it seemed like only 1g of agar would not be enough at all

"MEDIA NOT TO USE!"
Coconutwater I missed that myself. Seems like aloha doesn't use it for anything.

Coconut oils have anti fungal and bacterial properties to them. So the milk definitely wouldn't work.  As for the water I'd imagine its a similar case.
