Cacti and bugs
    #2410613 - 03/09/04 12:01 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hi I have had two 7" peruvian torch cacti for a few months now and around the time I set them up in my room very small beatles have been appearing around and on my bed. They are about the size of a match head and have a golden/yellow/brown striped pattern on them. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what they are, if they might have come with the cacti or soil and if they are dangerous to the cacti? Another thing is I have never seen them on or around the cacti themselves and only ever on the sheets of my bed, but that is probably just because they are white which makes the bugs easier to see. Thanks a lot in advance to any advise.

if i am right, you have gotten some bugs called Chelinidea vittiger and can in worst case cause death to the plant. they also lay eggs under the spines. you should try to get rid of them asap

Thanks for the reply. How can I get rid of them? There is a small hole in one of the cacti, but I thought maybe that was caused by the other cacti's spines during transit. Is this to do with the beatles? Where can I find more information about this topic? Thanks a lot

try this, 50% hot water and 50% rubbin alcohol and and brush the plant with that. also allow the soil to dry out some. if that doesnt work you can use pyrethrum spray but im not sure how this will affect the cactus tho.

Will this method harm the plant at all? I have not watered the cacti since i recieved them because it is still cold here in England. I think it will be a few more months before I begin watering so the soil is very dry. Will be there be any visible signs on the cacti if it is the beatles that you suggested? Thanks again

brushing it with water\alcohol shouldnt be harmful to the cactus at all. of course, dont overdo it . but the pyrethrum spray i am more unsure of- try search on google for it i am a little bit unsure. ive used that method on san pedro before on other bugs
