Making birdseed - 24hour soak no cook 6

Lets prep some 24hr no cook wbs.
I mainly started doing this from spitballjedis tek and from some old heads saying.. 'i just soak it 24hrs load and pc'
When ever i add heat to wbs, it turns into a sticky mess. It becomes clumpy in the jars and performs poorly. Most people defend grains like rye because you can go from prep to cool down in a few hours. ...BUT, much like other things in mush cult.. i want to grow mushrooms. I do not want to boil water, or time a boil, or have to do anything at any certain time. all i want and need is some hydrated grains.
WBS soaked 24hrs plus the price makes it a no-brainer for me. but to each his own, right?
the only real pain in the ass is rinsing. however, this was said in spitballjedi's post..

TheEaglesGift said: Leave the sunflowers in! They provide lignans, fats and other nutrients that the other seeds don't have. I actually don't strain any of my floaters at all. I'll have random pieces of bark and beetles in my grain jars, and it all gets colonized all the same. I hate being wasteful.
I have yet to do it this way as i am fussy and like to clean my seed but i will for my next batch. and i will update to show both. complete with results too.
you will need!
-a good songbird blend of wbs. nothing with corn or sunflower heavy recipes. NO finch seed!! something about a oil we dont need? i could be wrong-need references** -large pot or vessel to work with seed -wire pasta strainer to fit large pot(makes life easy if it fits) -small strainer for skimming -sink
Measure out desired amount of seed. i scoop out 8 half quarts for 7 myco quarts worth of soaked wbs.
Add water from the tap to cover some seed. mix or agitate the water to help clean and mix up the seeds. (holy shit i have a hairy arm)
skim off all that shit that floats. be thorough.
Mix it up again. more crap will float up.
skim that junk out as well.
now we dump and rinse until the water is clear. i do this about 4-6times. depends. the last batch from a bag is always dirtier and takes some more washing. use your pasta strainer to hold the seed while you are dumping.
After your rinsing, the water should be clear. the seed should look really nice too.
you may also add gypsum or whatever to your water. i couldnt find my gypsum.. oh well.
Now we cover and soak until tomorrow afternoon. see you then!!
Its tomorrow!!
Here is my 24hr soaked birdseed.
save some of that water!!
store ice cubes and use to make grain water agar. just mix in agar and use as normal(more on that later)
use your trusty wire pasta strainer and drain in the sink while you prep your jars
after 20min-30min i take out and tilt the strainer to drain out any trapped water.
not much but you dont want that extra water in the jars.
load up jars with desired amounts.
clean the rim of grains that stick. these can be vectors later
THIS IS HOW THEY WILL LOOK WHEN LOADED. NORMALLY THESE WOULD BE ALMOST TOO WET. DO NOT WORRY!!!!!
screw on lids and get the pc ready!
i needed 4 regular mycoquarts and 3 receiving jars for LAGM2017 g2g masters add tin foil covers.
load up. MY AA915 holds 7 quarts. i tried to squeeze in a pint jar once. it cracked. 7 quarts is it.
do this for 2hrs. 15psi
use as desired

I just did my first WBS following foomans tek...which is bringing water to a boil, dump in the WBS, let it sit for 20 min although I let mine sit for about 45 min and it was kinda mushy, still used it...and then rinse and PC....no real soak time....shall see how it works.

just simple perfectly hydrated grains. every time.

I'll try your tek with millet.I really hate millet so far... I bought it cheap a few weeks ago and had no success with it. It always got way too dry. Growth stalled. I have a lot of experience with rye and wheat but millet annoys me for some reason. Maybe your TEK can convince me otherwise.

I either do this or do a 24 hour soak no simmer.
But I prefer 24 hour soak no simmer if I have time. Both perform about the same for me. I don't skim off floaters

I'm done using millet too, seems to takes longer than most other grains to fully hydrate due to the hard shell. White sorghum/milo is also much cleaner than the red ime.
Can't wait to see how this turns out. Hope to see pics of colonization with your millet/other grains mix too, to prove the millet theory
This is a mix of 50/50 millet & sorghum. Notice how you can only see millet due to my bad prep

oops, just noticed that.. the current jars in the LAGM2017 thread are 90% millet. some should be spawned in the next week or so.

i shopped around. lowes has a really good house brand of songbird wbs. buts its waay to expensive for large use. 80c per lb plus tax
the local grocery megamart of mine happens to carry dirt cheap, corn free, handful of debris wbs for 49cent per pound. they also have this sweet 90% millet flavor that is even cheaper but is only sold in 5lb bags and they never stock enough to buy for larger uses.
or you remove it all yourself which is a mega pain in the ass. or you dont and you use it all as is which is supposed to be fine. i WILL BE doing this really soon. ive got 3days worth of seed prepping so i will try the 'dirty mix' next week.

check the potd thread. pasty said something about eye balling the color. its a byproduct anyway so wasting the water is mute since it goes down the drain anyway.
i think ill try 2 cubes per half cup of media

Just a note.. the high millet ratio wbs has taken forever to colonize.
not saying anything as its my first grow using this ratio of wbs and im working with MS but the growth is noticeably slower than the same transfers that went into a more 'balanced' blend of seed... now that i write that out i understand a drawl back of wbs people mentioned but i never really understood/experienced until now its not a uniform grain like oats/rye.. hmmmmm
im sure ive seen some people with really great results using millet. just sharing mine.

I didn't have much luck with the non cook WBS
these jars are from 5/15 and still aren't 100% yet. Maybe I'll give it another go soon.
