That's quite the big step in the right direction.

I had been meaning to post this, but what with the announcement at www.clusterheadaches.com and then the attack on The Shroomery, I fell behind. I will post a little of the history behind this in the "Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms" forum.

Yes, the PinkSharkMark referred to in the announcement is me.

I'm unsure that this study can really be considered political or legal or even activism, so I will confine my comments to the Gourmet & Medicinal forum for now.

A small but critical correction:

The FDA has not yet approved this trial. The researchers heading the project have no doubt they will be able to obtain the required approvals, but it is a lengthy and complex and tedious process. Some think it will take about three months, others think a year is closer to the truth.

This is good news. However, there are some things that I don't understand.

1) What does this have to do with PinkSharkMark? Will he be the guinea pig in this experiment or what?

2) How do these medical trials differ from those that MAPS normally do?

Learyfan asks:

1) What does this have to do with PinkSharkMark? Will he be the guinea pig in this experiment or what?

I helped lay the groundwork for it. For more details see my post in the "Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms" forum --

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...sb=5&o=&fpart=1

2) How do these medical trials differ from those that MAPS normally do?

Many of you are probably aware of past psychedelic studies MAPS has helped set up. They have been instrumental in getting quite a few MDMA studies done, and they were involved in getting the ball rolling on the first US study of psilocybin in recent years: the one involving the use of psilocybin to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

What has MAPS so jazzed over this study is that:

a) it will be conducted at the MacLean Medical School at Harvard University

b) it will be the first study of LSD in human subjects conducted in the United States of America in over three decades

c) it is the first study in over three decades to investigate the use of hallucinogens in the treatment of a physiological disorder. With the exception of some less-than-rigorous studies done in California in the late Sixties regarding the use of LSD to treat migraines, to the best of my knowledge all the others have addressed either psychological conditions -- such as depression or schizophrenia or OCD -- or behavioral problems -- drug/alcohol addiction, criminal recidivism, etc.

And yes, I am aware that medical marijuana studies have been done regarding physiological conditions such as MS, but the medical community distinguishes between marijuana and the tryptamine/phenethylamine group of hallucinogens such as psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, LSD, mescaline, etc.

However, as I still am having a hard time classifying this news as anything to do with politics, activism or (at this stage) law, I do believe it better that those wishing to explore this news further do so in the thread linked above which leads to my post in the "Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms" forum.

Wow, PSM I take my hat off to you. You have done very very good. I do this this has to do with PAL because of the legal status of psychedelics as well as the fact that you're a moderator and a long time poster here. Allow me to ask another question.

1) It is nessessary for clusterheads to take shrooms every day??

2) How much do they take when they dose?

3) On this page i'm seeing that LSD and psilocybin research appears to have been made in the US before. Am I misreading?

Thanks. I have to admit I'm pretty proud of my contributions to the chain of events that brought this about.

As for leaving the thread open here --

The fact that I am a moderator doesn't give me permission to talk about everything that interests me -- in this forum.

I strongly believe that the best forum for a continued discussion is the Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms forum, because the study involves using hallucinogens for medicinal purposes. I don't mind leaving this thread here so that the regulars can see it and link to the thread in G&GM, but I do think it more appropriate to post in the G&GM forum rather than here.

Answered in the thread in G&GM.

3) On this page i'm seeing that LSD and psilocybin research appears to have been made in the US before. Am I misreading?

The last clinical studies done in the USA where human subjects were administered LSD ended over three decades ago. Until recently, the last study done in the USA where human subjects were administered psilocybin was twenty-five years ago. Now the study with psilocybin and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is under way. Ours will likely be the next one.

As for the legal aspects -- the purpose of this new study with psilocybin and LSD is not to try to legalize either one. That will be left to some other organization down the road who may wish to use its results to challenge the DEA's classification of these compounds as a "Schedule 1 Controlled Substance". The key determining factor in claiming a compound belongs in the "Schedule 1" category is that it has no known medical purpose. Clearly, if it is proven to be not only an effective treatment for Cluster Headaches, but the most effective treatment currently known, a very strong case could be made that its classification as a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance is no longer valid.

However, we need look only at the medical marijuana studies to see just how far that argument has taken us so far. This is why I say that at this time, it is premature to consider this study one related to law.

Methinks perhaps you mean G&MM.
