Pour Tek Frustrations

So, I'm moving on from pasty plates into the world of pouring. I've been cultivating for a while now but have always been too chicken shit to try it.For my needs PP's have worked great, but now i'm at a point where I'm simply making up too many plates

I can see the value of pouring from a quanity perspective. I made up 20 plates tonight in no time. However I felt like a big old goofball doing it. I knocked over a few of them. dropped some lids. etc and felt very rushed.

One part I struggled with specifically was the parafilm. Near the end I finally got the technique down....but is it neccessary to do this in the plenum? I found this to be a challange because the parafilm (or the waxy backings when I was finished) blew all over the place and made it a challange.

Any tips from you old timers would be much appreciated. I found a quart jar with an stf filter worked quite well for 20 plates. Last time I tried using a small liquor bottle but had major overflow inside the PC

I didn't really use a ten per say....just mixed my agar up using my regular recipe then sterilized for 30 mins in a jar with an sfd. Then poured in front of the hood and wrapped with parafilm.

Haha. I use an equal amount of agar-agar powder to an equal amount of potato flakes. I just eyeball it... 20g per L.

Don't drop a shitload buying premixed stuff from suppliers. That recipe works great and its so cheap it's almost free. I don't fuck with it but there are all sorts of variations. Check fast Fred's cookbook

Use something easier to pour with. Quart jars might be a little clumbsy.
I used to use a liquor bottle, I drill a hole thru the lid and pop an SFD underneath.

You can get agar media bottles specific for this pretty cheap online.
I use Erlenymyer flasks with threaded caps right now.

When you pour, maybe break them up into shorter stacks while you get used to it. Start at the bottom lifting the rest of the stack, pour then set the stack down, all the way up thru the top.

Parafilm just takes practice. You don't need to wrap blank plates, you can put the stack into the sleeve they came in, or in stacks of 4 into sterile (fresh) sand which bags/zip locks.

The best trick I learned for pouring plates, is to wait until the agar is cool to the point it *might* start to solidify if you left it any longer. Not only is it easier to handle, you won't get any condensation

I stopped using Parafilm. It would always dry out and crack. I cut up a roll of cling wrap with a miter saw and i have enough for years.

I use cling wrap when I'm out of parafilm (which is hardly ever as it lasts so long).

I've never had it dry or crack tho

Probably my dry climate. Although it is super cool I don't see any real benefit to it over cling wrap and its a bitch cutting up all the strips. Plus the $$$.

The quality of parafilm depends greatly on where you get it from....sometimes it sits in a warehouse for years. That's why it cracks. What do you guys do for storage?

Just leave the dishes sitting in front of the hood until they solidify, then wrap them.
