Why is it...
    #2409396 - 03/09/04 01:00 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

That America has the highest homocide rate of any country not currently engaged in a civil war? Some say it's guns, some say it's the media, some say it's lack of prayer in schools, and some say it's the ethnic diversity. How would you explain America's violent tendencies?

Some say it's guns
Despite common opinion...Canada has many guns, too.

some say it's the media
Most of our media is copied from America anyway...

some say it's lack of prayer in schools
Canada is among the least religious countries in the world, according to recent surveys...

and some say it's the ethnic diversity
Our government uses the term "multicultural melting pot"...

I don't know why America has so many homicides...but it can't be any of these things alone if we in Canada share all these attributes yet have such a lower homicide rate.

But why are there so many more gun deaths in the US than in Canada?

Ok, maybe I'm thinking of "violent crime" rate rather than "homocide," but the question still stands.

But why have they "never learned how to behave"? We certainly aren't the only nation with a lot of urban poor.

i think it's a problem with the culture of america's poor.

there are a lot of contributing factors. single-parent homes, illicit drug trade, poverty, lack of effective deterrents.

it is definitely a problem of the urban poor. if you look at the crime rate amongst white america, it's comparible to europe.

it's not directly motivated by poverty either. most violent crimes are not commited for economic gain. poverty is only a secondary cause.

You bring up the drug trade, and I think there might definitely be something there. Gangs would probably be a lot less powerful if they didn't have the illicit drug trade to fund them. As for lack of effective deterrents, I don't know about that. The U.S. is the only first-world nation to still use the death penalty.

prison sentences for violent crimes are unacceptably short. i'm certainly not saying that this is the only cause, or even the main one, but it definitely factors in.

the average time served for murder is 10 and a half years. it's 5 and a half for rape, three and a half for robbery, and 2 for assault. that's just not enough.

Ok, in that case, I agree. We do need to extend the length of these sentences. Of course, one of the reasons that they get such small sentences is because of prison overcrowding due to all the drug offenders coming in. When you look at it, it's amazing how so many problems are connected to the Drug War.

My thought is that it's guns.
Without guns, homocide becomes a little harder.

The system creates a whole lot of urban poor. Without them, it just wouldnt work properly. Of course those who have nothing are more likely to be involved in violent crimes born of frustration and desperation.

Its also fairly obvious that the general attitude towards firearms and the love of cowboy films also has a large part to play in the level of violent crimes in the US.  :smirk:

My thought is that it's guns.

there are countries with less legal gun ownership, or none at all, than america, with higher crimes rates. there are others with more guns and significantly lower crime rates. it's easy to blame guns but that just isn't the problem.

what system?

Of course those who have nothing are more likely to be involved in violent crimes born of frustration and desperation.

most violent crimes are not for financial gain. most assaults and murders are set in motion by arguments (which are often drug related). the US is up there in the world's per capita rape rate too, and i never heard of anyone raping for money. poverty is a secondary cause. poverty in america breeds crime when people are brought up in shitty environments by shitty parents, not because people are out there stealing to eat.

that attitude being what?

if you insert the words, "amongst black youth" after "towards firearms" and replace "cowboy films" with "gangster rap" the statement would be a little more accurate.

Well, at least your half right. But it isn't because there are too many, but too few.

States that have adopted concealed carry license programs, have drastically lowered violent crime.

This doesn't address the root cause of course, but does provide aid in confronting it.

The welfare plantation/family destruction/vote buying system coupled with the drug war/legislated morality/criminal employment system. To sum it up, TOO MUCH FUCKING GOVERNMENT.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.
