Just wanted to share to keep this thread going.

This is when I first got this cutting from member impaired420. I believe back in Nov. last year. Gotta give him props. We were both worried about freezing weather. The plant came well packaged, well rooted, And in decent shape. It bounced back quick.

This was after a couple weeks by a south east window with a 35 watt CFL.

This is about the best this cutting has looked.

I purchased a LED light for this and some of my other plants. Sally got root bound in the dixie cup and started dropping leaves. So I transplanted her. She was happy at first with the extra room. I mixed my own coir based media with some organic fertilizers. Well around the same I added panda plastic and some kelp fertilizer. It is either too much light or too much ferts. But she is not real happy as of late. I have not given any fertilizer since and I moved sally as far away from the light as possible. I also pinched the top growth. The plant is starting to show branching but I am still not sure about how happy she is. I am contemplating putting by the window instead of under the LED.

Any input on this?

Like others have said sally d is a very temperamental plant. But I do like the challenge. I will definitely fertilize sparingly from here on. Here is what the cutting looks like now.

New growth looks good.

Don't worry too much about the older leaves. I've read it's common for Sally plants to do that during winter.

Nice job with the smart pot.

Thanks for the reply. Just noticed that last photo was not very clear.

The new growth does look healthy so far, but the older leafs are staying curled over. Whether the soil is wet or dry it doesn't matter.

Yeah I like the concept of the smart pots. Makes much more since to me. I just am not sure about transplant time. I just invision it being rough and the root mass breaking apart?

How do you guys that use smart pots manage? Do you just cut the smart pot or are you able to salvage it?

I put an upside down pot, bucket, paint can, or something else of slightly smaller diameter under the smart pot depending upon the size. Then you just grab the top of the fabric and pull it down around the top and work your way down. Kind of roll it down or fold the top over the side and pull it down that way so it'll end up inside-out. It's actually really easy and the root ball/soil stay intact for the most part. I've never had a problem transplanting out of one. It helps if the soil is pretty dry before you do it. The roots hold the soil really good, because of how filled the soil is with roots. Gotta love that air-prune.

I have smart pots that are about 10 years old and they are pretty much perfect. No need to cut them off.

Hey mole !!

The Sally is still looking pretty healthy in my opinion!

Don't worry about the older leaves they all eventually curl up and fall off...

You should have transplanted the Sally a week or two Max after recievining it in the solo cup but it looks like she's right on track now.

That bottom growth will explode in size within the next month and she will get more bushy, then you can start topping or using other training techniques to get it to fill in even more and branch out.

Keep us updated!

Oh and about why she reacted to the light badly I want to say either it was too much light intensity or it was simply just the transition from CFL to LED light.

I've had cannabis plants struggle with the transition and also my very first salvia plant didn't like the move to LED from CFL either but now I grow them all with LED and my main problem is the intensity.

By what you said It may very well be the intensity. From what I remember you said you had a 300w led. I decided to go with the 450w, being that there cactus and other plants in the grow area. If you are having struggles with the 300w than that is likely my issue.

When I first put the plants under this light I burned all but the cactus. It was way to close out the gate. Moved it up to about four feet away from any plants and about 5 feet diagonally from the sally. Everyone became happy again. I slowly moved the light down again. It was still all good. When I added the panda plastic and some kelp meal things went south. I also moved the sally closer to the light at this time. I also think the fan was drying sally out to much.

I think it was a combo of to many changes. Sally is all the way in the corner now about 3 1/2 feet from the light. I also added a small pail of water near by. She gets lightly misted morning and night. And no more ferts. for the time being. I am just going to maintain the current conditions and stop messing with her. I will reassess down the road and might put sally back by the window with cfl.

A few weeks ago a tiny leaf fell off sally into the pot, and it stayed green, so I decided today it's time to see what's going on, here is sally, and two of the small leaf that fell into the soil :awesome:

That's really cute hahah.

So now you don't even need a branch you can just clone via a leaf!

Hi guys, new here but been growing my Sallys for about a year now. I also received my 3 cuttings in a tupperware tub, 1 was quickly destroyed by my kids, one looked like it was on its last legs for 3 months and the other was okay...

And these are my babies a year later! Okay, we moved house and the lousy English winter doesn't help, but think they're doing okay. Pinched them about a month ago and now they're happily spreading.

I'll take some cuttings when warmer weather but I'm really chuffed hahaha

So now you all know, if new growth leaves fall off by accident, put them on soil

I've read that although the leaves will root, it won't grow without at least a cm of stalk too, as it just doesn't have the right tools. But looking good and great to know this is still carrying on in the UK despite silly law changes!

I basically have withheld from showing my salvia for a long time now. They're not doing good, and its obviously some sort of pest. Has been this way for nearly 8 months. They started indoors, then I moved them outdoors in october. Its hot where I am, like REAL hot, so I keep them indoors during summer, and let them do their thing outdoors during winter months.

Yeah, like I said, not exactly pretty

hey, for now they're still alive. Perhaps I will treat em with neem before summer kicks in. I took a couple cuttings off of this plant after the pic was taken, in hopes of keeping the plants going!

Shroomizzy as far as your salvia go I would suggest turning them ΒΌ every couple of days. Even though I'm no salvia expert I know that most plants lean like that by reaching for the sun.

The bottom leaves always seem to vary on all salvia I've seen, even cuttings taken from the same plant. I have noticed that if started in chicken manure or other high nitrogen medium right after rooting they tend to grow busher and branch off more frequently.
I swear by chicken manure it builds a strong immune system and improves the microbial component of the soil. On top of that its steroids for plants even when compared to strait urea.Highly recommended if you can get it.

Hi all. Just wondering whether anyone else propagates salvia from the nodes? Just one node sitting in a damp humid soil is enough. I find this way easier than taking cuttings to be honest.
