using "spent" mycelium to spawn?

someone i met in a bookstore told me that he recently made a large casing with 10 quarts of WBS. after a disappointing flush apparently due to poor conditions, this person told me that he decided to use the substrate as spawn, and spawned out a large amount of pasteurized straw. can this work? will he return in a week or so to find it has colonized?

or does the mycelium quit growing in a vegetative mode and switch irreversably to reproductive growth when it starts to pin?

when it's spawned to new grain it will colonize, the issue is to keep it from completely drying out and keep sterility throughout the proscess...

so you're saying that it doesn't permanently lose its ability for vegetative growth once it goes into reproductive mode?

can anyone else weigh in on this?

you can clone with fruits... fungi dont really have a vegitative...

if you have LIVING mycelium it can always be used (unless contamed) for producing more mycelium
