This is very cool, and I just happened to pick up 2 big bricks of coir this week. I assume I could use any insulated cooler as long as it has a 5+ gallon capacity? I've got a big square one. I do see the benefit of the circular one but don't have that handy. I'll keeep my eyes open at Costco....

How are the casing properties different between coir only and coir+verm?

Unfortunately that doesn't answer the question at all. I've read that casings are useful for the grower as it helps make it easier to maintain surface moisture and curious about how it's different to use only-only vs coir+verm (or even only-verm).

How can I tell you if i don't use casings. You want me to give you an answer based on no experience? My advice is fuck the casing layers
Try both out...

I have 2 mini mono's with a coir/verm casing mix now. It seems to want to colonize. In past I used verm only and it didn't seem to happen. For comparisons sake I was going to use verm only on the 2 I have to do today. This has left me wondering as well so I will report back or make a post about it in a couple weeks.

coir alone works fine.. the verm in a coir/verm mix is mainly for water retention and seems to lighten the mix a bit as well; myc won't colonize straight verm like it will straight coir. You can use a straight coir "top/casing", but you may have to mist it if it starts drying out.
But like Bod said, try both and you decide.

coir is food, verm is a mineral used for water retention, without coir youre not replenishing lost energy used from colonizing the grains then breaking them up (energy spent repairing the myc network) and colonizing bulk sub again.. coir is food and increases yields hugely over just verm by far any day...

the casing itself doesnt do anything if its not needed, if your growing conditions are poor then adding a casing layer will aid in pin development and give you a microclimate needed for pin development. if your growing conditions are fine then skip the casing layer because its just another step that could lead to contams.. and wont do anything that wouldnt have already been done in optimal conditions..
casings are for those that need it due to dry environments.. cubes dont need it thats for sure.

Why is it I get mixed signals on coir? People are using coir as a bulk sub and then others turn around and say it is nothing more than a casing as it has no nutritional value I'm thinking of trying the Damion5050 coir tek adding a bit of gypsum any thoughts?

If you don't follow teks you'll have a bad time. I didn't say just use hot water for a reason. Then go through the trouble of using insulated buckets and pre heating them
