Great tek. I found it trickier than expected to find coir locally, then stumbled on some in a hardware store of all places.

Could you potentially use the used up mycelium in the tubs (after like 3 or 4 flushes) as spawn for an outdoor patch? just mix it up with a pasteurized substrate?

Just dump the spent substrates outside. Its entirely pointless to pasteurize substrate for outside

I really like this tek, I bought myself a 10gallon cylindrical cooler. If you think about the math for calculating surface area vs volume you know that the rounder the object the greater the ratio of volume to surface area; hence for keeping things warm longer a cylindrical cooler is best. Likewise the larger the object the greater the volume to surface area ratio; so a bigger cooler with more ingredients at once is ideal for maintaining high temperature. So I decided to go big to maximize the heat break-down of the coir.
I pack the 10gal cooler with 2000grams coir, 2 qt verm, and a cup of gypsum. I pour 3 gallons boiling water in.
It takes forever to cool down... 24 hours later it is still hot enough to burn your hands. 3 days and it's still warm but cool enough to use.
My coir comes out smelling like molasses and it's nearly black.
I don't know if this actually creates better BE or not, has anyone done a side by side of super-cooked vs slightly cooked coir?

So one time I was really baked and put TWO bricks side by side like this in my cooler. It took about 30 sec. after adding boiling water to realize that I had fucked up royally. They expanded with enough pressure to rip my cooler in half... Put too much coir in your cooler, your gonna have a bad tiiimee.

Those last two pics sold me.
If you don't make it to 4,5,6 flushes, your spawn COULD be cleaner. No ifs ands or butts correct?

Yep, and it works well. Just make sure it doesn't bake, but gets enough sun, and stays moist. It could get rained out also so be wart of that. I just use houseplants instead.

I just gave this a try, was pleased with the ease of clean up.
I was wondering if this works for casing 50/50+ as well?

Hi Bod,
Really New Guy here. Thank you for your info.
I have 4 qt jars almost fully colonized. Can't find what happens between "Spawning to bulk in a monotub" and your "Easy AF Harvesting TEK". What should I be doing, step by step, after the mono tub is filled with spawn and coir. What is the ideal and maximum temperature for the monotub (I am using an attic, and summer is approaching). Also the abbreviations are killing me - what is AF? Thanks

Just throwing out a thanks to Bod - between this tek and the unmodified mono, its made a huge change in my success. As a homebrewer, I always wondered why people didn't use these water cooler's for pasteurization - given they've been used forever for all grain brewing and holding temps over time. Awesome stuff Bod!
