Would there be a reason we couldn't use a 2 (instead of a 5) gallon insulated container?

I can pretty much use any sealed container, insulated is even better. As long as it fits once hydrated. Remember coir expands. 2 gal will be cutting it close but should work fine. I've used a cooler that size.

Bod, You say we don't need to add gypsum to the coir, and it evidently can be done without gypsum (the pics show it--and even possibly show greater yields without gypsum), but is there any advantage to including gypsum in the coir at all? I'm trying to decide whether I will be buying some gypsum.

It adds calcium and sulfur if you're deficient in it add some.

LOL Well, yeah, but how am I supposed to know whether the coir (Eco Earth in this case--Grow!t was too difficult to find at a reasonable price) using is deficient specifically in Ca and S?

mushrooms use calcium and sulphur as building blocks for growth.
only bad thing is if you use too much and you get a block of cement. but it takes alot lol
Ive used it with and without. I see no noticeable differences.

I'm guessing the spawn grain is more than full of enough of both for the fungi

it can.. with a proven isolated monoculture, not starting with spores..
its very rare that an experienced grower starts with spores.
you have to do a lil agar work to find that yield.. then you can compare b4 and afters. there are billions of genetic combinations when you start with spores that its not a valid side by side..

How much of the "25% yield increase" is from gypsum vs using an isolate?

Thanks. I bought a 50lb bag of oats, so I think I'll be good with oats for a while.

Not even RR documented that or proved it so. Grain of salt I'm going to say you'll see no difference based on my experience growing.

I had seen the pics demonstrating the outcomes of your grows with varying substrates (coir vs cvg, etc) and I had seen that coir (solo) had actually (from what I could tell) outperformed cvg.
Thanks alot! Really money saving advice!
