Re-reading and another possible cause could have been my field capacity. I do remember thinking to myself that it seemed "moister" than last few, but I ignored my gut and used it. Should have followed my gut. Really, thanks Bod. I'm going to put myself in time out, and have me write out "I will take my time, and follow the TEK."100 times. That'll teach me.

I've been having good success with doing the bucket tek and then pasteurizing my worm castings and chicken poo separately and then mixing it into the bucket tek after leaving it overnight. My life is so much easier this way.

Picked this up just for this TEK. First poured 1 quart of boiling water to warm up the insulation, and let sit till my big pot was boiling. I then poured 4quarts of boiling water on a 648.9 gram brick of coir. Lid closed nice and snug. I'll let it sit till I wake up around 3 or 4 and check the temp. I'm going to spawn 3 shoe boxes at 1:1. Thanks

I have been using a cooler, pre-heating with a pan of boiling water, add my brick and verm and stuff, add my boiling water, then I come stir at 2 hour mark, then leave overnight and use the next morning.
I have noticed that the last couple times when I go to stir, my coir expanded basically straight up. This last time it seemed rather dry too, don't think I added enough water.
My question is, is there any worry that the coir isn't reaching the correct temp for the correct duration since it rises straight up like that and was rather dry...? Or am I being stupid since the entire cooler seems to stay hot as fuck for a long time....
My bad. Just want to make sure it doesn't effect the process. Thanks.

How much water are you using? A little more than 4qts of water for a 650g brick of coir works for me, but that's just for coir
If you are adding dry verm before you add water, you will need maybe closer to 5qts of water to reach field capacity
I would add the verm separately, if there's excess water, use the verm to soak it up and reach proper field capacity, after you cook the coir
There really is no correct temp, you just want it to hot for awhile, and you can always add water if it's too dry

Thanks man.
I use 4qt but I need closer to 4 1/2 or 5 I believe.
So no worry about the coir rising like I mention while its in the cooler...? That was my main worry. That it wasn't reaching the proper heat but I think i'm just worrying too much

I'm about to spawn to bulk using just coir as a first time experiment. Would you say 4.5 qts of water is definitely closer to field capacity than 4 qts? I have Eco Earth for my coir bricks and on the package it says to use 4 qts of water but if you say 4.5 is better then I'll take your word for it. I just don't want to over hydrate since it's a lot easier to add water afterwards than trying to remove it.

Each brick varies if you don't wanna go too wet then stick with 4qts and add water later if need be.
I just wring it dryish if there's too much water

4q to a brick is the wet side of things People use 4q of water a brick and 2q of verm with damions tek

I'm gonna try 3.5 qts and see how that goes since I'm just trying coir with no verm. If it's not quite wet enough I'll add some tap water. Btw using your unmodified mono tek Bodhi

Looking around for an answer to this, but only found one result.
What is the approx. dry coir to substrate conversion? I'm going to do my first grow with a couple mini mono's and I need about 6qt of sub.
I read 1 brick of coir (650g) will turn into 7 or 8 qts of sub. Obv. more if you are adding verm.
Is that pretty accurate? Just don't want to make a shit tonne too much and waste it.
<EDIT> Small print on the packaging answered this for me. 5kg=60L, 1kg=12L, .65kg(650g)=7.8L or about 8.2Qt.
Incidentally, my 5Kg block is actually 4.7Kg. haha
-------------------- Great teks here. And here. Fortunately, I’m adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber

approx - 650g (1 dry reg size brick)
hydrated with 1 gal water makes 8 qts of substrate (without 2-3qts of verm added)
remember, its a ballpark ratio with coir substrate, you can use a lil more or less and it wont matter..

Hey bod, Awesome teks! Crazy watching from the shadows seeing how these techniques progress and information changes. Ive been a shadow lurker/non poster for almost 6 years and finally needed to ask a question that I couldn't find in the teks. I was curious If after the spawning to the tub and waiting for colonization do you seal the lid with latches or just set on top to promote ge?
