Fun contradictions
    #2407701 - 03/08/04 05:32 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Everyone share your favorite contradictions!!!

Some of mine:

1. On television, they will air scenes where people are brutally murdered, and edit out curse words.

"Shoot those ----- -------'s"

/man with gun empties a clip into 10+ people

2. On television, they will air beer commercials followed by "Partnership for a Drug Free America" commercials, followed by anti-depressant commercials.

3. People who use tanning booths and have orange skin are considered normal, but someone who doesn't drag a razor across their face is considered weird, hermit, lunatic, whatever.

4. Pro lifers blowing up abortion clinics.

5. Nation building and forced democracy in foreign nations while freedoms are drained in the home country.

Share your favorites!!!

Spending milllions of our tax money in blowing up the shit out of a country, then spending billions in 'rebuilding' it. All in the name of "peace".

Fat people protesting tobacco companies
because ciggerates are 'unhealthy'. All while cloggin' their arteries with a tripple cheeseburger with bacon....

like how some skeptics dont deny feelings as real, despite there is no 'scientific' way to prove them , yet they deny any sort of spiritual happening as some how fake, even though it happens through the same outlets as emotions.

right-to-lifers that support the death penalty, citing the 6th commandment as the basis for both of their beliefs.

the US government- imposed boycott of Cuba because "they don't have a free market".

parents who tell their teenagers to act like adults while treating them like children.

people who say that its un-American to rebel.

when people who profess faith in God and the afterlife are terrified of death.

The frequency in which strength and weakness are confused with one another.

"Capitalists" that support prohibition.

"Enlightened" people who think they are better than everyone else.

Christian death metal.

I'm a skeptic, yet I have emotions. How dare I then dismiss "spiritual" matters?

Emotions exist has a function of the mind. The mind resides in the brain. By physically altering the brain we can change how the mind works... we can actually remove certain emotions. Now, the spirit is just a metaphor for the mind; it was an earlier way of describing the human conciousness... an individuals "inner being"
You can tell that these "spiritual matters" are faked because people have to imagine them into existence, and even then they only exist in that individuals personal reality. Grounding techniques are a classic example; you are asked to imagine something and with "practise" it becomes more and more real. Basically, you brainwash yourself. This happens all the time... the roots can be found in the need to feel secure, the fear of the unkown (especially death), needing to feel different/better than everyone else... some are told these things by others from an early age and never question them.
These are the "spiritual matters" that I try to stay far away from... they are egocentric, not crosschecked with the logic and generally make you blind. To break away from the universal reality by creating a personal reality "shell" is to function outside the framework of a common reality. Every major human conflict can be traced back to differences in personal realities.

My fun contradiction entry is...
People break away from the Universal Reality and form personal realities in the quest for truth; it is ironic that by doing this they are growing farther away from any truth they could have.

I argue with the Doctor often but not here. Don't quite get the Cuba deal, and the Strength/Weakness thing is confusing. You could easily make the argument that ridicule is the engine of intellectual evolution

dont you think its kind of communist for the american government to keep me, by force I might add, from buying Cuban cigars?

and dont you think its kind of hypocritical that they do this in the name of "fighting communism"?

It seems to me that if communism is such an ineffective system then the best thing to do would just be to let it collapse on its own. A government enforced boycott of communist goods undermines the free market and is therefore hypocritical in its essence.

as far as the strength/weakness thing goes... well there are just too many examples to name there, so I wont even go into it.
