your question isnt very specific. If you are using brf/verm cakes, then not sterilizing will almost certainly result in contamination. for your first time, follow a tek closely.------------------ see me here: www.geocities.com/vorpal_rd/justapic.html

Seriously, make sure you follow the tek with care for the first time. I took a ziplock bag filled with brown rice/vermiculite substrate and left it open under my bed to see what would happen. Over night there was all kinds of shit growing all over it, none of which was mycelium. In any case if you follow the mmgg or pf tek you will do fine. Keep everything as clean as you can, and make sure you sterilize well. I was only able to steam my jars in a pot, but I let them go for an hour out two and had no trouble with contam.-Peace and good luck- ------------------ easy

A lot of people don't have success WITH sterilization. Pressurizing is preferable and boiling will work about 85% of the time with BRF. Peace, Wildman

I have personally gotten in the habit of pressure sterilization because I can go ahead and put the rings on my jars. But intially, I just used my microwave and did't have any problems with birdseed.I've had nothing but bad luck with rice, but I can definitely say that not sterilizing the rice was a bad thing. I think I created saki or something. ------------------ Jade registered Wild Child? http://www.gypsystudios.com

There is something about the outdoors that can sometimes save yo0u from contamination. I had a bunch of colonized jars that I let sit around too long--contamed eventually. So, I followed the Ryche outdoor tek without the greenhouse and some shrooms are just started to come up after a month.

I've got a pressure cooker that I can use to sterilize with... how long should I steam-heat them at 15 psi to be sure of sterility? Also, the "standard" tek shown is 1/2 pint jars. Is it a big deal if I use pint jars and double the batch?

well Oxygen you probably should have made a new topic for that question, but anyway....to answer your question, i'd pressure cook 'em for an hour to an hour and a half. and the only difference a pint jar will make is it will take much longer for the mycelium to cover it. the only thing it will do is slow down the operation, but as long as you sterilize, everything should be fine. ------------------ "He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man." -Dr. Johnson "I should play God and just shoot you myself." -Tool happy shrooming!
