Thought I NEEDED to share this. The mother haul, 1 patch harvested over 2 days with 3 people putting in a total of ten hours of scissor time. Patch cover about half a square mile, Santa Cruz county. Took 3 runs through an Excalibur 9 tray dehydrator. Harvested early January. That box is 6 inches deep and weighs about 15 pounds. Filled twelve one liter mason jars.

Now that the season is coming to an end......

....I didn't harvest a whole lot this time around at all, only a small fraction compared to what my patches put out last year. Out of the 4 allenii patches that I know of around my area, which all produced good amounts last year, only 2 fruited this year. One of them pushed up a small flush of fruits back in late October/early November and that was all for the season...and my other patch had one small fruiting in early/mid December. By the time the second and much larger flush was coming up at that patch the temps dropped down to around/below freezing and most of the pins stopped growing completely and the fruits that were already developing were nipped by the frost and stopped growing.

If only all that rain in January came just 2 or 3 weeks earlier (or if those cold temps held off for another 2 weeks)

At least I got a little something though, and I got to munch down on some fresh mushrooms (my favorite) for my annual winter solstice camping trip....for a minute there I was thinking none of my patches were going to fruit this time around.

What I was most excited about this season though....I planted some spawn (just laid & spread out a few handfuls of woochips that had allenii mycelium growing through 'em) out in a natural riparian woodland type habitat last spring....and two of the three spots actually fruited this year (even after going all summer long with out a single drop of water or any moisture out in the 100+ temps of summer). The mycelium at all three spots is growing well and it is starting to spread itself onto other woody debris twigs/branches on the floor of the woods. I was stoked to see these mushrooms growing in a completely natural setting, and in an environment where they can grow and thrive with out any care or input (water/moisture or substrate) from me.

Once I get a few more of those patches going I probably won't be doing any more urban hunting/harvesting for actives .

That is a rough skinned newt, one of the most poisonous animals in North America.

My wife and I were on a walk in the mountain wetlands last month and saw one crawling across snow. They have zero fucks to give and are afraid of nothing. You'd be that bold if you were deadly to eat as well.

Within the same sorts of habitats that they'd be found in else where  :smirk: .....

...but it is a bit late in the season at this point. I'm sure there's some spots out there that are still doing things with all this rain we've been getting, but we're def past the peak of the season.

Did you hunt through the entire season with no finds?

They do, they have been found in and around the Santa Cruz area for sure.

They're even found inland through out California's central valley, and they have been found as far south as Santa Barbara and San Diego I believe....They are obviously much less common as one goes farther south (and inland) in general, but SC is only a little south from the bay.

I found them in 4 spots in SC this year! 2 in live oak 1 on the Westside and 1 in bonny dune. But thay din not come easy IV spent most of my free time this season walking around rain or shine looking for edibles & actives. The 3 pics on the left are from SC.

The print will be white, it's http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Gymnopus_brassicolens.html. Has a rotten cabbage odor which the actives lack.

In the bay?...Or what part of the state?

I always forget about spring time ovoids, but they aren't a common find out here are they?

For ovoids, should I be hunting the same exact sorts of (urban) habitats as I would with allenii & cyans?
