I've got pins!

...proclaimed my buddy as he stared in awe at the early signs of life emerging from his first cultivation project. He noticed the first pin this morning when he went to turn of the light in his grow chamber and fan off the cakes and casings. Tonight upon closer inspection, he noticed 4 more popping out of the cakes. In the last few days he has noticed hundreds of little white knots in the mycellium, and assumed that those are the beginning of pins. If this is true, do they all become pins for the most part? And how long does that generally take? Sorry for the lack of pics but this guy's digital camera is funky and not working with the computer. They'll probably be up tomorrow.

yes, those bright, white knots will become pins....some will anyway, eventually. i always get primordia and hyphal knots mixed up, but the white knots are one of the two. the other one that it isnt, is one step away from a pin with a head.
anyway, semantics aside, to answer your question...yes, what you see will possibly be future pins and carpaphores. not all will of course. as for a timeline, you're looking at 3-4 days to harvest, maybe 5. you must remember, in nature, they've trained themselves to sprout fruitbodies within a couple days (during and after the late season rains) to release their spores, and they'll do this incredibly fast to ensure spores are dispersed for next seasons germination, before the climate becomes too inhospitable. or so my understanding goes.

he just upped the temp in the terrarium from 20c. to about 26c. (79f.) by placing the plastic container directly on the heat pad at a low setting. hopefully this will speed things up a bit.
