I was inspecting my garden because Ive been seeing mealy bugs in all my plants and I saw bugs flying out of the dirt on one of my sallys.
Im assuming theyre fungus gnats because they came from the soil.
Ive seen people use some stuff I think was called mosquito bits or something like that to kill the gnats larva.
Do you guys know if this stuff harms the beneficial microbes in the soil?
Also how do you guys get rid of and prevent mealy bugs from getting in your gardens?
I was just picking them off when ever I saw them and things were looking better for a little but now Im seeing them more.

I see people use 'BT' based mosquito dunks, you can also cover the soil with a mulch or cover to stop them from laying more eggs.

I think spinosad is more effective than BT. Use neem meal... it'll get rid off soil pests and help the good soil life.

Neem oil for leaf based pests
Thanks MB
I know how to fight the gnats I just wasnt sure of the name of that mosquito product, I need the name so I can look for it and I wanted to know if that product also kills off the beneficials in the soil.
And I wanted to know if neem works to get rid of Mealy bugs and I would love to here how exactly other Shroomerites fight off Mealy bugs.

Neem, and other systemics, can have varying results with mealy. Their cottony/waxy hideaways can repel liquids. Isopropyl alcohol melts mealys on contact and doesn't harm cacti if kept out of direct sun for a while after application. It can used on root mealy too, best to unpot, remove all soil and inspect well, killing and removing bugs as necessary, and potting with fresh soil/clean pots.
Check underneath pots, some might be hiding away there. And around the pot lips too, they hide there like RSM. Sometimes finding them underneath the pot is the first sign a plant has root mealy. Often seen at the crown of a cactus, be sure to check areoles, below spines, down to the base, they really do hide away anywhere! And blend in with the wool fairly well on some species.
edit: oh, we are in a salvia thread I've not fought mealy on anything non succulent so only some of my waffle is relevant

Damn, two pretty big plants - one of them my 'mother plant' - have really droopy leaves and some start to turn brown. It doesn't appear to be a lack of watering, personally I'd say it might be dry atmosphere (so I am misting and put water for evaporation, another plant apparently stopped doing so bad in a sort of humidity dome. Other possibility I'd consider is root rot but it would be a pretty big coincidence it is multiple plants affected.

Am I doing it right..? A section I'd guess is about 8 inches long got clipped and was hanging on by a thread, I clipped it with sterilized sheers, cut a 2L bottle I cleaned in half, filled it with a bit of filtered water, dipped my cutting in rooting powder, set it in water, sealed the sides of the bottle, and put the contraption near the grow light the salvia uses. I plan on changing the water daily until roots form.
Also, I begun having other issues, a small mite infestation has started. I'm using neem oil, will I be able to consume leaves after neem oil usage?
My plant is growing a steady 4-5 verticle inches a month, I hope that nothing hinders it's growth.

Just a quick update on Sally. Removed a few leaves to allow more light through, she's getting more new leaves all along two sides now where she didn't before, the centre isn't doing so well still but is getting bigger and healthier I think Last pic is showing a leaf fell off a few weeks ago now, I left there and I'm kinda hoping it might grow because it's still green hahaha

Wow she looks really good.
I'd still trim those stalks about half way down if it was me... It will send auxins to the auxillary shoots below the cut and you'll have a bunch of new branches instead of just those three, which will break eventually as they get taller and heavier.
Just my 2cents. Looks amazing either way.

Would you trim all three and put in water?
With sally do you add anything to water or just water and change daily? I didn't take cuttings yet but once April ish time and weather milder I might cut them back. I'm scared to do anything as it's my only one!!
My little leaf that fell off is still green lol.

Personally I think it's easier on the plant to just trim it at an angle then plant it directly in soil and dampen it pretty well.
Then cover it in a bag to retain humidity and give it some light and that's it.
In two or three weeks you can slowly open The bags over the course of the week or two.
Sorry for the late reply. It should be a very easy process believe it or not.

Ahh cool thanks, I must say that little leaf is still green I'm sure it's rooted itself in the pot on its own!
I'm just waiting til it starts to warm here and I'll look at taking some cuttings off her and see how I go So pleased she getting more bushy now she was a bit poor, but was only a single skinny cutting in spring so she's coming along nicely all in all.
I'll chop all three tops I think come spring try to root them and see what the rest of the plant does for me.

These were delivered to me right before Christmas. I ordered a Luna, a Blosser, and a Hofmann/Wasson cutting. They sent them to me and it wasn't even too cold, so I was a bit surprised when they showed up as basically green sticks with some brown leaves. I was a bit disappointed, but figured I'd plant them and hope for the best. I mixed up a soil, which I use for every house plant, potted veggie plant, pot plants, or trichos. It is a mix of equal part compost and peat/coir, then about 1/2-2/3 a part of perlite/pumice, and some earth worm castings for good measure. I found a great biodynamic compost locally made from an organic farm on craigslist, and it was only about 15 minute drive from where I live. To this basic mix, I add a bunch of organic amendments to enrich the soil. I always use smart pots, because they are far superior to plastic pots, or even clay/terracotta. Here they are shortly after I received them.

Here they are about 2 weeks later. Starting to see some new growth. These have just been sitting in my room in front of an east facing window. I have kept the soil pretty moist, but no misting or other humidity domes or anything. The RH in my room averages around 40-45%. Luna

Blosser

H/W

Here they are today. Still doing well. Just water them once a week or so. I think I mixed this soil a bit weak, so I just top dressed with some more organic fertilizers and mixed it into the soil. I am going to do a kelp tea feeding soon. Just need some more kelp.
Luna - Her big branch rotted away. I thought I may lose her, but she is still sprouting new growth.

Blosser - The biggest, but it was the cut with the most roots. Looks a little light green. That's the main reason I am gonna do a kelp tea soak here soon.

H/W - Looking good.

I joined the club.
