i joke i joke. but seriously. it wont MAKE more pins. it traps moisture down near the surface. that might 'make' a better micro climate if you conditions are already shitty, but dont have shitty conditions.
im a human. no way wax paper can do something i cant. like..fuck that noise
Ahh sorry man. Cool thanks. I don't like the idea of the wax paper myself, seems unnatural and I won't use it, but was curious what the science behind it was.

pixelpopper said: What creates a better pin set is surface moisture evaporating, reforming, evaporating again, etc.
Fresh air allows for the evap, and if moisture doesn't reform sufficiently on its own then you need to mist it.
Depending on how tight your dubs are vs how tight the flipped lid is, one will allow more FAE than the other. Depending on what your surface moisture is like, more FAE may be contributing to your results or causing too much loss of moisture. Either way, more FAE is good so long as you maintain your surface moisture.
The flipped lid boxes probably had better surface moisture along with still receiving FAE, which is prob why you had better results on those.
Appreciate you too

Well this box-o-mutants turned out better than I thought it would, Had to cut some early for testing

It looked weird when it started pinning, but seems pretty good now

Am I getting knots before full colonization? I'm quite concerned.. especially with how the bottom looks. It may be slightly better than the pic shows it to be. These were taken yesterday around noon I believe. I didnt see the knots grow or anything - again... on the sides.. I tried SO hard to evenly spread this one out. But needless to say I'm thinking bacteria even though it does look good.. anyone? sorry for any blurry pics, i really fucked up my wrist this weekend

what did you use for the substrate? i only use coco. so i cant really help other than pre mature pinning can be a bad sign.
pop the lid off. take pics of the surface.

I’ve had that happen to some tubs that were over field capacity, mine eventually got the green and quickly made their way to a hole in the ground

Will do when I get home mushboy, thanks for the quick reply. It was 50/50 manure (I wanted to see results in comparison to the plain manure), at least thats what its called. I know there was straw in there so I believe that's the addition to the manure.. I know it's a bad sign - maybe it'll still flush once.. anyway it was my first try the spawn looked REALLY clean and was consolidated. My substrate from this vendor has always been fine, spawn bags - not so much. Just using some leftover supplies from a botched order.. 10 spawn bags w/ bacteria. CVG will be only substrate in the future as I'm not ordering from vendors anymore. I have 20 WBS jars ready to go but i sprained my wrist and am worried about inoculation.

The spawn was thoroughly mixed, I know theres a bunch of spawn pressed against the side, I cant seem to get it perfect anytime.

IME premature pinning is the cultures response to contamination. It is trying it's hardest to get out fruits and complete its life cycle before the contamination takes over. It could be bacteria, but to me it seems to happens mostly when there is a mold in there, mainly the mean green trich monster, which I have had plenty of experience with sadly.

How thick do y'all make yalls casing layer? I just cased a few and hardlyncovered the surface. I figured this would allow for more fae while mainting keeping the moisture level

i only use a thin top layer. like really thin. basically just to ensure my surface is even and grains are covered.
ya'll
last casing i used in a shoebox was sand. worked ok. but i get better results without.
