Some weirdly rhizo growth in these two. Not sure if the sub was a lil too wet before mixing with spawn

I've got 2 tubs with some heavy rhizo also. Were you saying that your sub is to wet and can cause That?

I usually always see that kind of growth on top if I add a top layer of sub... don't really see it when its all mixed with no top layer.
Also lookup aerial growth

I did use a top layer of sub aka pseudo-casing on these, but the sub felt a little overly wet when I mixed it. They are APE and will love the extra water if no problems arise. Could be overthinking it too

So.. i have 12 jars going right now, was hoping to do 6 shoeboxes, have never done any type of bulk before and am in the process of ordering coir and stuff today, just want to double check.. how much coir should i need for 6 shoeboxes? i was reading damions tek but it doesn't really say how much it makes per his recipe (i might have missed it, i'm a fucking idiot).. thanks

Might need about 1 & 1/2 brick of coir or so.
I've been splitting 1 brick to 4 shoebox's with about 2 qt spawn in each.
Some people might use less.
Not sure if you could get away with using 1 brick split to all 6 or if it would be easier having more sub.
You could probably also make 8 shoebox's instead. Use 2 brick of coir, split it evenly across the 8 boxes with enough sub left over for top layers, (might be easier making 1 brick at a time and do 4 boxes to get a feel for how much sub you need to save for top layer, but then you'll have to prep it twice) and then make some boxes with 2 qt spawn and some with 1 & 1/2 qt spawn, or some with 2 and some with 1.
I recently had 4 boxes with 3, 2qt spawn and 1, 1qt spawn. The first flush on the 1qt spawn pushed out just as much mush as the other 3. The second flush was smaller though for sure

Or I Just realized if you did them all 1 1/2 qt that would evenly distribute across 8 boxes >.<

Or do your planned 2qt in 6 boxes

Thanks enk, the Eco Earth comes with 3 bricks, so that should be plenty just wanted to make sure..
Tying to actually order stuff ahead of time rather than stressing and running around at the last minute...

Yes sir

Would an increase in FAE possibly remedy these tall skinny mush?
I would guess it might be genetics because my other tubs are in the same conditions but didn't perform this way, but I have a different strain (I thought... it looks exactly the same though...) that is performing similarly, tall and thin.
I had them dubbed and I now have the dubbed and slightly off center so there is a very small gap on the side of the tub, like 1/8 of an inch. Real small gap. But not sure if they might need more than that even.
Advice ?

I've written up but not yet finished a Shoeboxes for Dummies tek that covers this, which I intend to post here where ready. Summarizing from that, this should get you started. Adapting Damion5050's Bucket Coir Tek for shoeboxes you will want the following:
- 1 regular coconut coir brick (nominally 650g)
- 2 quarts vermiculite
- 4.5 quarts water
which when prepared per Damion5050's Tek, will produce enough substrate to prepare 4 shoeboxes with a little left over. This assumes you will be using 2 quarts spawn and 2 quarts CV substrate per shoebox, and then adding another 1/2 quart substrate over the top of each shoebox as a casing layer. If you want to prepare 6 shoeboxes, or 1, or 8, or 20, you should be able to scale up or down the above recipe as needed. Or just follow the recipe exactly and store any extra CV substrate for later (though you would probably want to cook it again prior to use).

While that sounds helpful and all I would think this thread/write-up is as “for dummies” as it gets. Mushboy did a good job of putting things in layman’s terms and linking to other people’s ideas and info on shoeboxes in the OP. I’m just skeptical of how much other pertinent knowledge could be composed in a thread about shoeboxes that isn’t already mentioned here.

Well, the main thing i just wanted to know was the proper formula for making coir sub for X ammount of shoeboxes.. cause with my luck i would be like 1 box short or make 3 too much.. just planning ahead

I hear ya. I use 1qt of spawn or sometimes 2 always at 1:1 so I get 4-6 shoeboxes from a bucket of sub. But honestly I’ve never weighed the materials, the only thing I really focus on is the amount of water I put in. Once it’s mixed up, check for field capacity. Too wet, throw in more verm. Too dry, throw in more water. I don’t think bucket tek is an exact science. Once you get into manure based subs or species that use supplements in the sub it’s a different story but for our needs I wouldn’t overthink it. Tends to cause more problems than it solves
