Wait, so you can just fruit out in the open if you slap some verm over the sub??

I think it would lose moisture too quick unless the room is really humid. Easy enough to put another box on top upside-down as a lid though. Sort of like a humidity tent, also leaves room for the fruits to grow.

It does. so far ive only been growing this way during winter. and my home is dry.
not really dry but dry enough to get scratchy throat sometimes at night without water.

some of the pics of posted show bruised myc on the surface from drying out..
you can prevent this by staying ontop of misting. but if you ever get sick/wasted
you can really dry out quick.

as for fruiting in the open, just leave the lid upside down. or titled. no casing layer. just toplayer outlined in OP.

That is always the worst crisis in this hobby, its not trich, its not space. Its finally having the free time to get something knocked up, pressure cooked, or spawn to and not having the stuff you need to make it happen.

OK, so I made a couple shoe boxes of my own.

Shredded some purple mystic brf cakes for my spawn. First was spawned on the seventh with 5 cakes to 1 and a half quarts of CV(no g). I forgot the top layer and just left it that way. Second was spawned on the ninth with 4 cakes to 1 and a half quarts cv, very thin top layer just enough to cover any visible brf chunks.

Third was spawned last night with 3 cakes to 1 quart cv. About a quarter inch top layer.

Question, should I add a thin top layer to my first one or is it too late?

Thanks mushboy, munchauzen and bodhi for the inspiration, good shit!!!!

honestly top layers are optional.

i like to use them because i am paranoid about exposed grains and ive just always done it.
but dont feel like you need it/results suffer because it really shouldnt matter.

the only thing i can say is that i rarely get side pins. the only things i do
differently then what most people do is..
-top layer
-i keep surface conditions glistening 24hrs
-i use a more 'open air' fruiting approach then most

beyond that i do everything the same as everyone else(that follows teks)

Cubes can handle a lot drier than people expect. Substrate hydration and surface hydration/humidity is FAR more important than FC humidity. once pins get to be an inch or two tall and if you have a canopy pinset you can basically leave the lid completely off and not even mist, maybe bottom water if you need. that's my experience with unmodified anything.

I always find substrates colonize faster when you mix everything evenly and leave off the thin top layer I have never had a problem with exposing grains as long as I keep the tub closed and pasteurize the substrate adequately

Just my 2cents.

the ??? tray turned out to be maz.

the pins were super dense. not really clusters just lots of them

ended up putting out 333.7grams wet from 1 mycoquart wbs to equal parts 'pcvg'

the other two shoeboxes, AA+ and mexican cube, made for this write up are about 6hrs away from picking. although i could do it now.

picked the mexican and aa+

mexican cube was 395.6grams. 2quarts spawn.

aa+ also 2 quarts only came in at 202.. half of the tray was behind so it should put out another 100-150g wet.

mexican had this weirdo growing in it. its like 3 shrooms fused into 1.

so with the maz shoebox and these two thats 932.1grams wet. plus whatever the other half of the aa+ puts out.
ive been noticing that the shoeboxes made with 1 quart put out better BE then the 2quarts.

So what your say for BE purpose we should use one quart of spawn and maybe 2 qts of sub with lids on all the time

Just spawned my first shoe box

2.25 qts APE MS spawn
3.75 qts coir verm bulk sub
1.25 qts coir verm casing (nice and thick)

One of the spawn jars recovered in under 48 hours. The other two took 3 days. :justdontknow:

I may have prepped too much sub because there's only about 2 inches oF clearance from sub to lid

First time working with APE but I hear they're stubby anyway so we'll see how it works out
