What do you guys think, is this shoebox ready for fruiting, or should I give it a few more days to consolidate? It is Rye/BRF/verm spawned to coir/verm on September 4th. I was a little surprised by how far along this already was when I checked on it today.

My last couple grows I have been experimenting a bit. In the past, when I have tried to do grains in quart jars like everybody else does on here, I have always had issues with getting the moisture levels right. I always end up getting too much water in my jars, no matter how long I drain/dry my grains.
So I decided to try a new approach (new for me anyways)
I prepared about 2 jars worth of PF tek mix. So about 1.33 cups of verm, 1/2 a cup of BRF, and 1/2 a cup of water. I started by putting the verm in a big mixing bowl. I then mixed in the water and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then I added the brown rice flour and mixed it all up really well.
To that mix, I then added about 1.5 quarts (actual quarts, not mycoquarts) of Rye berries that I prepared according to a tek I found on here. I then mixed it all up really well.
I then packed the mix in these 2 cup/473ml PP5 containers:

I also used a dry verm layer just like you would with PF tek. So basically, I kinda did a modified PF tek with grains added. My theory was that the verm in the jars would help me get the moisture levels right, and I added the BRF just because I had it on hand, and I figured some extra nutrients couldn't hurt.
I have done this with WBS and Rye so far, and (knock on wood) it has been working great. This is actually the perfect size grow for me, because I don't sell my shrooms. So the yield off a shoebox like this will last me for quite a while.
Just thought I would share that for other small time growers here. If you have done PF tek, you have a PC, and you want to try something a little more low key (aka no sketchy looking SGFC), this might be a good option for you to explore. You can still get great yields, too.
The best part is that I didn't have to spend any time making fancy lids or worrying about getting the right moisture levels. I didn't even have to buy any new supplies. I already had the PP5 containers, and I just used aluminum foil and micropore tape for the lids.
I realize for the people doing bigger grows this method is useless. But for me, this method is absolutely ideal (so far)

The tub looks great. I personally would let it get 100%, or even when you start getting pins, then introduce more air. Even with the lid on a shoebox it gets a lot of FAE

I wait until pins show up and get about an half inch, then either dub tub if I'm not around or crack a lid if I'm home and I can keep an eye on the surface conditions.

thats why shoeboxes kick ass. its like an introduction to 'mini bulk'. and if done correctly, the yields can be impressive.

Yup, I am doing nothing but shoeboxes from here on out. They are just too perfect and so discrete.
Thanks for the advice, guys. I am going to leave the top on until I start seeing some knotting or pinning!

Welp. It finally happened. One of my boxes got trich will a bleach bomb, soap clean and rinse be sufficient to clean out the box it was in? its just a small spot of mold.
hope the other 3 pull through.
Quick general question, my boxes are on their third week after spawning. I let them colonize and consolidate (lid on) for a week, they've been in fruiting conditions for 2. when should I start seeing pins? they are knotting up, but haven't seen one pin yet.

Well here's is my first shoebox Gotta say though, I've been seeing some awesome pinsets in cult lately and I'm extremely jealous. I really like these shoeboxes, they are the shit.

whats your bottom pin situation like? whenever i get shitty top pinsets like that, its usually cause I let the top dry out, which is easy to do. shoeboxes get lots of FAE even with the lid snapped on. if you have a bunch of knots and pins on the bottoms, then consider misting your shoeboxes starting a few days after you spawn them.

Well ive got some side pins on one side, and alot of knots on the sides and bottom. And it definetly got too dry. There's actually a bit of bruising on it. I'll do that on the next one here in a few days, This one I let sit for 2 weeks for misting. Which I can see now was too long, but ill get her next time. I'll figure it out eventually... I hope haha
