That's neat, though ambient room light is sufficient IME

Why a larger tub? I'd do the shoeboxes without lids, inside the larger tub,  unmodified,  and use the large tub lid for FAE ... though shoeboxes are pretty efficient with their own lids

I just use the lid until dubtub is necessary: not such a pain... whatever works for you

So I have a bit of a dilemma.  Ran out of plates, have more on order, but need to spawn something.  Really wanted to spawn my APE, but my RH clone plates are at and getting close to the edge.  Should I go ahead and spawn these other RH plates or go APE?  Should have the plates I ordered later today or tomorrow and have agar on stand by.

RH C1-T3:

APE T3:

Other happenings:

AA+

RH C1-T3 Isolate (I should spawn this by itself right?  Not mix it in with my other RH bags)

P.C. Brazil:

Can you not drop them both?

If you're set on ape and can only do one, put the other in the fridge til you're ready (upto 2 months I believe)

Only have one bag of GS ready.  Going to make some more hit takes a while.

My thought is maintaining a tub of four with one lid will be easier than dealing with a dub tub on every shoebox

Shelving which is needed for dubtunbed shoeboxes is right around the same price as large tubs

Tubs breakdown and store easier than shelving

I've tried both methods and honestly, I don't really have a preference because they're both good methods that work equally well. Putting 4 shoeboxes in a big tub and setting the big tub up like a mono has an edge because it is easier to move it and store it and dial in the humidity/FAE. The dub tub has an edge because you don't have to use giant tubs, and it's easier to stick it in the closet out of the way if you need to. I also like the dub tub because trichoderma mold spores go airborne and if something gets contammed with trich in the big tub, it's still likely to contam the other shoeboxes in the tub with it, so you may as well have just done a mono in the first place. I already have a big spare closet with shelves in it, so I mainly switched to dub tubs for that reason because it's more convenient.
This is my dubs on the shelf and my 12 QT tubs on the floor.

This is some pan dubs that I have going. I just stuck them in this big tub because I didn't have anywhere to put them yet. I'm considering putting micropore tape on the holes and removing the dubs, but since they're pans and they're really finnicky, I might just keep them how they are.

By the time one dirty quart showed trich and sporelated, your other boxes would be near done... still an advantage over one big monotub where the dirty spawn would've been mixed throughout the entire substrate, colonizing many places at once

Sorry if this has been covered.

Has any one tried these with straight verm as a bulk substrate?

I've done a few this way and had some work great (1 oz. per flush) and some suck. But that variance could be do to other conditions.

I've read a lot on this and I don't understand why coir would be so much better.

Coir holds more water. Myc seems to react well with "cooked" coir.

Another practicle reason would be cost. Bricks of expanding coir are cheaper by volume than bags of verm.

Very happy with these shoe boxes for my second grow ever. 17 days from spawn on both of them. A lot of room for improvement i am sure but ill take it! Still not sure how to re-hydrate them for the second flush, continue misting or bottom water, dunk?

looks good.

i don't think aluminium foil lining is wise, tho. i've read mycelium eats it. which means it probably ends up in the fruit. which means you eat it. aluminium is really not good to eat. maybe not bad like lead, but still is best avoided.

Don't line, unless for easier cleanup... then with a trash bag... they don't prevent side pins, proper surface conditions do... just pour enough water down a corner to float the sub for a few hours, drain, and return to fruiting conditions

Keep in mind that you're misting to maintain surface moisture, not to hydrate the sub... you want to allow evaporation to occur between mistings to stimulate pinning and avoid over-saturating the substrate, and only mist superficially, enough to return the surface to a glisten: hydrating should be done between flushes, or with bottom water if the sub becomes too dry for any reason midflush...

 I have no choice at the moment! I clean the absolute shit out of that room on a regular basis including the floor. Knock on wood, but I haven't had any contammed tubs yet. Everything kept on the floor has a filter in the lid. Notice the dub tubs are the only thing off the floor because they have no filter.

You already nailed me on the liner caps! i made 6 more boxes with no liners. I only mist once maybe twice a day as needed to keep the surface beaded all nice like. Thanks for the re-hydration info!

Yeah man... if you're misting twice a day after full colonization, you could probably get away with tightening FAE a little so it's more manageable... gotta fan running or something?

This is kinda relevant to your situation. I fruited these mudabottles in a big sterlite tub. I haven't done shoeboxes this way only because the situation hasn't presented itself but still relevant.

No fan, actually no air moving in that area at all. 46% humidity in the house currently, no ac or heat on. i have them dubbed because the tops are dark green (my new 6qt totes are clear tops) so there is a gap on the short end of each side, 1/4 by 6 inches i would say. should i micro pore tape them shut, will they get enough fae?
