Shit this is a long-lived thread.
I've always been curious. Folks like shoeboxes for the compact & convenience or more for testing isolates?

I like them because I grow for personal use. (All my friends and I). More than enough mushrooms for everyone and I enjoy several varieties at once.

Yea it just adds more surface area to ur grow area. I'm not good with math but I wonder how many shoeboxes fit in the volume of a monotub and what the difference in surface area is.

So, I've been thinking about switching from monos to shoeboxes exclusively. I have about 4 shoeboxes growing at any point, and about 1-2 mono tubs. I'm not great at this yet, so some of it may be just that shoeboxes are more forgiving, but I literally get the same weight from a canopy in a shoe box as I have from my not-so-great-half-or-less canopy in my monos that I have to harvest in phases.
Has anyone done this? I was seeing other people talking about it above, and yeah, I think I'll actually get more surface area. I should be able to hold 10 shoeboxes in my space, versus 4 shoeboxes and 2 monos. It should allow me a lot more liberty in spawning, harvesting, and variety...

Easily 2-3 times the surface area in the same volume, and the advantages of versatility, spreading your eggs out (so to speak), and test batches

Yea I'm thinking 3 high by 4 wide would be around the same as a 66qt.
Imagine if u used 2qts of spawn in each shoebox. That would be a crazy high yield for that much space.

Ok, yeah, this seals it for me. Consider this my last official grow in a mono tub that's happening as we speak!
Hell, even my partner was all "Girl, just use them small ones, they turn out so much better and they're less mess!" Can't argue.

I noticed they don't hold as much humidity as monos so they require less fae from what I've seen.

There's more cleaning involved with large piles of shoeboxes, but they fit in the sink much better that monos

You probably won't be able to stack shoe boxes when fruiting unless you build a rack of some variety. At least this is the route I had to go. I suppose if you are using less sub/spawn you might be able to get away with it?

Maybe this has more to do with how many you're spawning at once.
For example, I spawn 2-4 boxes a week. Week 1 boxes will fruit first, week 2 underneath developing pins and so on. Rotate up and dub after harvesting week 1 boxes.
