It's been said (and I have to agree) that cubes like a cooked coir substrate and so by heating coir with boiling water your not trying to pasteurize, but just cook the coir to break it down a little.

Cool, thanks.
I did the same (hot water from the tap) last night and I'll see how it works.

Finally ate the rest of my last batch, so doing my first grow in over a year.
Only put together two shoeboxes, and things aren't looking good so far, guys.
One tub is starting to turn yellow-brown, and the tub that is starting to pin is NOTHING but mutant blobs so far.
The one that is blobbing is CRS, while the one that's turning yellow and hasn't started fruiting yet is PE.

1&2 both look dry IMO. Guessing 3 is the PE? I'd case it now with Jiffy Mix or equivalent if it were mine. That surface could maybe still be fixed.

Yes, 3 is PE. Interesting, I will have to read up on casing layers again, it's been a long time.
Do you think that will help the yellowing situation? I was assuming that was probably some bacteria or something. That was my main concern.
I don't think I've ever actually used a casing layer before. I do have some Jiffy Mix on hand, though. Hmm..

I feel that. I wish I could, I'm so busy these days it's hard to get it in.
Right after I spawned these shoeboxes I had to leave for a week and a half.
I'm just hoping something pops up before I have to go out of town again in a few weeks.

Usually one but ideally 2. After that it's fertilizer for the garden.

Some may disagree but in my experience PE varieties are so slow to colonize if they don't get cased at 100% or close to that the surface gets too fucked up to pin prolifically.

Vibe_Enthusiast said: Question:
Do you guys think it would be okay to add 2 Qt of spawn to one shoebox? Well, technically it's not 2 Qts because they're both only 2/3 full. Or should I just do one jar to each shoebox?
I would prefer to spawn to one shoebox.. but if it makes more sense to spread it out..
Just bumping this

Try both, see what you like. If I have spawn that is at ALL questionable I've stick it 1 qt/shoebox personally.
Other than that I like 2McQ's to a box 1:1 ratio, 1/4" casing at birth.

Bumping that specific question? Just do 1 per box. Or get the boot box, (about double the size of a shoebox, then u could put both in. But u might get better yield fruiting them seperate

But like Nube said, you probably get better total weight splitting them. That said, if you have 30 shoeboxes going, you sure as fuck don't want 60 shoeboxes going..
