I personally leave the lid on and let the top layer colonize.
What is your top layer? Some pop the lid earlier but I'm not one of them
I leave it on until pins have formed

I would personally like the lid on and wait for full colonization, then co tinue leaving the lid on and wait for pins, unless you observe the surface for some reason doesn't have beads of moisture, which normally will not be a problem from my experience, and mist then replace lid.
I always leave the lid until after a full pinset

Casing layer? Fully colonized? Many of us fruit from spawn with no casing (not necessary for cubes)...

Enkidu, thank you very much... yes I have read the BRF > bulk thread in detail before starting this little experiment... and yes, clearly something is off here. No visible contaminants and no strange smells, actually it has that nice mycelial smell going. I kept the lid on until what looked like full colonization, which took about a month -- obviously too long -- then flipped... and have had these issues since.
It continues to put out pins / fruits just at a slow / steady pace, not a big eruption...and then the weird wilting / twisting thing.... interestingly, the fruits from the tub are much thicker-stemmed than their cake counterparts, despite their strange shape... anyway, i have taken it out of the sgfc, i'm keeping the lid on upside down and putting it right next to the window for more light. i'm going to watch for a few days then report back.
i appreciate so much the support of this community and thank you for taking the time to offer your suggestions... i know that p. mexicana is *relatively* less well-covered both in terms of growing and also trip reports, and I will continue to offer whatever i have learned in my experience so far for the benefit of the community. Love to all.

Technically, I believe the lid latched on is considered fruiting.
Yeah everyone does what works best for them.
It works best for me to use a top layer of my coir/verm and to leave my boxes sit lid on until i get a full pinset.
I know other members have reported this exact procedure with good results as well.

I have 12 shoebox's at the moment, 6 are starting to get their pinset coming in. Will post the results once they do, probably will just look like all the other box's i've posted over the days ... so nothing new or exciting

It's AA+. Caps, I do fruit from spawn but I also use a casing. I did a side by side comparison with 12 boxes. 4 uncased, 4 cased when I mixed the boxes, and 4 had a late casing.
The 4 I cased when I initially mixed my sub out performed the other boxes pretty significantly. I end up with wall to wall pins every time.

Yeah i've never even tried not using a top layer. I don't even like to think about that.
But I have tried multiple fruiting methods, taking the lid off early, leaving it on, etc. etc.
Always best performance for me personally when I leave the lid on until a dense pinset

I also lean toward a top layer. At least for shoeboxes. I have tried without and have always had my best flushes with a top layer.(could totally be my environment ) I also leave the lid on(other than a peek and a pic)till pinset, and hell,I really only pop (unlatch) the lid then. If I have the tubs I'll dub,but lately I've been working APE and they fruit nicely in a shoebox without ever removing the lid at all.

May have to give it a shot... shame my last 2 triched out; i had left them shut for 4-5 days (surface colonization) and really seemed to set a good number... do you top layer at spawn as well, or late Nate?

I top layer at spawn, but I have late cased(after full colonization)with coir when my surface was matted up and have had good results But as of right now, everything I spawn gets about 1/4" of top layer at spawn.
