Mush have you ever considered altering the title to "Making shoeboxes, an introduction to bulk tek". I say this as I did mini monos before and now am strongly influenced by these shoeboxes. I and using them the way they are for colonization, and then pop lid off and stick in my tall 25qt mini mono's as a "greenhouse" of sorts. I was just recommending the slight change as we all see those, what is the easiest way to start bulk, or to go bulk post. I think that little change would be like throwing up a flag. Hey over here noob, start bulk tek easily with this.

i love seeing all the grows. you guys rock.
without everyone posting what they do and critiquing eachother, this thread wouldnt bring me as much joy as it does. i thank you all for the contributions and helping me better define myself by seeing how others respond to what i wrote.
tl:dl-i wrote something people can follow and make happen themselves?!
its a cool feeling is all.

thats not a bad idea. i made this thread to keep myself focused while i battled withdrawal. so its a mega rough draft. im doing making shoeboxes 2.0 over the summer but i could still spruce this up. thanks!!

It does feel good when you help someone learn a new skill that they enjoyed learning. I guess that's why some people teach things like art and shop class.
I have to add that I REALLY love how much easier it is to clean these out as opposed to a mono tub. I can throw a shit load of these in the bath tub to wash them out. I may go back to "liners" simply for the ease of cleanup. I am wondering how well the little 5 gal trash bags would work for these. Like open them up, put sub/spawn in, fold over the edges and snap lid on. Trim bag so it hangs just a little outside the tub. Then when done pull out and toss and tub is still clean.

maybe the shoebox IS the monotubs liner.
i hate liners but im sure it would work fine. kinda like disposible cat litter box liners. just dump the old, replace and fill up the new one.

I leave the lid set loose, I don't latch it down, but today was when I was planning on opening the top up fully. I was giving it a chance to fill in with more pins.

I just opened it up more, has a nice amount of pins. Sadly this culture only gives me small ass fruits. Can not wait until all the jars are gone. The last jar of LC will either be used ONLY for cakes, or get tossed. I fucking HATE this culture, lol.

Shoeboxes are a lot of fun. they are a great go-between from trays in a sgfc to full blown monos. a normal tote can hold 3 shoeboxes/trays. You can also just crack the lid and fruit inside its own tote. super multitasking.

Each tray can hold up to six quarts. you can make some hefty trays with a 1:1 ratio. normally i do 2 quarts spawn and 2quarts PCVG. Filling up the mono with the trays is basically they same as doing a mono. the same principals of the mono are in play. a good thing is that if 1 tray goes bad you can localize and toss it without disrupting the remaining trays. seeing a speck of trich on a gaint mono sucks ass.
I use 80qt totes.

Each shoebox is about a dollar depending on where you shop. i prefer to grab them at target. the ones at mega hardware stores are always filthy with thick dust. the ones at target are always super clean. i avoid walmart at all costs.

Get you spawn ready! today will be 2 quarts of AA+, 2q of mexican(cube) and 1q from a jar that had the label fall off. oops.

I make PCVG(pressure cooked cvg) in 4 quart batches and PC 1hr in oven bags. quick. easy.

Then i dump my spawn in the shoebox.
dump in 1.5 quarts... roughly.. of PCVG.

Mix it all up really good. get in the corners. be thorough. I just use gloves wiped with iso. you can go bare handed but i hate dirty nails.
Make it as level as you possibly can. I get really upset with myself if i do not make them level.
I then clean up the edges with a wet iso cloth and apply the remaining half Q(roughly) as a top layer to cover grains and make level.

4 total quarts fills it right to the fabricated ridge in the tote. makes leveling easier
  SUPER OCD ABOUT BEING LEVEL!
Sometimes you realize you didnt mix it up that well.. its not a big deal but i try to mix my best.

Thats all. repeat as needed. Label as desired. I like to label with..
-variety -date of grain inoc and type of inoculate. -date when tray was made(today) -how much and what type of sub used when you have lots things going proper labeling is super important.
(i cracked my tote. fixed it with packing tape. who cares)

So I filled 2 with 2qt of bacterial grains each. I am letting the regrow, they are doing well and growing fast, then I will case with verm and fruit like I did some 10+ years ago. I prefer to get something over tossing something I worked on.

I got 3 PE multispore shoeboxes going...

I gotta make some more agar for the winners from these. I just finished cloning and swabbing an interesting cluster from the third tub. No gnarly neck or anything, most PEs I see have that bumpy shit on the neck. The ones in the other tubs have it, but these guys don't.

I'm eating these now...~37g fresh
