I asked, because I was also lazy on my APE shoebox. I did the same, just left the lid on unlatched. None of mine hit the roof, but I can see APE and shoeboxes are a good match.

PESA, LGT, B+. First proper shoeboxes in a while. Straight coir, just bucket tek, was a little over field cap.

Yarn, we cant really tell if theres beading without super high res up close pics. you be the judge. howver your pins look happy and theres humidity on the sides so it does look good, just keep an eye on it. The texture and little beads are your indicators. a gentle misting if youre in doubt, let it fall nice and even on the surface.

Whoa looking great, real promising
I know it's space consuming but I prefer a bit taller shoeboxes so that I can fruit in there for the most part. I grow subs and ovoids in shoeboxes right now (fully cased and colonized) and will be placing them on my balcony when the season is right. I'd rather fruit a thin layer of substrate on wood shavings (so limited easily accessible and decayable substrate) and replenish it next season. Spares more room for the fruits in the shoeboxes, and limited substrate may pose more of an emergency triggering fruiting? Let's see if this works.
I also would very much like to grow P. weraroa and P. zapotecorum in shoeboxes <3 Need to look into ways to simulate their native habitats.
Some real cue tip like strands of these subs.. 50/50 oak and pine shavings seems pretty good.. I will be picking up a lot of free oak sawdust and shavings :>

Just wanting some experienced eyes on my shoeboxes. Day 11 since spawn on pics 2 &3. Pic 1 is just an experiment with black kow straight from the bag, about 18 days since spawn. I applied bubble wrap to 2 and 3 yesterday morning as I was told it would help a great deal in initiating pinning and give me a better pin set since I opted to go with no casing. Pic 2 is pes Hawaiian and pic 3 is south American both mixed 1 1/2 quarts spawn to 2 quarts hpoo/coir.

Get rid of the wrap, outdated misinformation, and will likely cause issues... supply FAE and monitor surface conditions... they're knotted up all the way across,(especially #2) and will pinset nicely most likely... #1 has some side fruits, late casing?

No casing. Just an experiment with black kow manure straight from the bag. I've heard of it, but no one could say how well it worked so I figured I would try it and give some updates on how it works. Lol. As you can see it does work but not well. Never fully colonized. I just figured I'd get what I get out of it and plant it outside. As for the bubble wrap, it is now gone. One thing I'm learning quickly about this hobby is how fast it evolves. Lol. What is considered standard in a lot of older threads I read is now outdated. So, any tips from any of you experienced growers is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use I assure you. Thanks for your time.

When you say to keep an eye on surface conditions. What exactly are you referring to? I know I don't want any beaded water. I should be getting plenty of FAE. I have them dubbed. I'm sorry for all the newby questions. I read on here at least an hour or two a day and find a lot of conflicting information. I would just like to hear it from one or a couple of good experienced people on up to date practices.

You kinda do. You dont want pooling water, but little beads of water after misting is the goal. the beads evaporate, make a humid microclimate, and the evaporation triggers pinning.

Ok. Gotcha. Good, cause that's pretty much what I've got. Lol. So, one more question and I'll quit bugging you guys. Should I be fanning and misting in a shoebox? I thought the purpose of a shoebox was to dub it and leave it. I'm fine fanning and misting if needed. Whatever it takes. I just want to do this right.

A fan it the room would be cool, to ensure better FAE, but no fuss. Dub it, flip the lid, wrap a grocery bag over it, whatever you want just keep it moist but not flooded with some breatheability.

FAE is fine without fanning, as long as it's not in a closet... just maintain surface moisture, but not overkill: want it to evaporate between mistings... Never mist on a schedule, only when it needs it
