Thanks! PE was one of my favorites, especially since I was told in the early 2000s that it couldn't be done on brf.(and I believed it and never tried ) I'm digging the APE. Out of 32+ brf cakes only 16 or so even germinated.(and poorly at that)Slow going from there, but finally seeing some fruits. Getting some blobby mutants in a couple of the tubs/boxes.

I have some AA+ going as well.
Actually about to spawn a couple boxes. Gonna find some good clones.

Do you have to sterilize the swabs before swabbing a fruit? Or does it not matter since it will be dirty anyways?

Yea your supposed to buy sterilized swabs. I imagine you could probably sterilize some q tips or something in a pressure cooker if you can't buy pre sterilized ones

Wrap a few in tinfoil (prolly in a jar with a GE lid) and PC for 20-30 minutes @15psi... probably overkill, but will work

My first ever set of shoeboxes has now been tossed in the garden, and I'll be making another set tonight. After reading a bunch, I realize that I used too low a ratio of spawn to sub, and I'll fix that this time. Also, due to extenuating circumstances, I had to put three shoebox subs into a 16qt mono, dubtub it, and leave it outside for a couple weeks in temps that went as low as 70 and as high as 90. They may have been over-watered, which led to a number of really big fruit, and a number of disappointingly small fruit. I'll be able to control the temps better this time around.
Here's my one outstanding question: I never got "flushes." I had a constant stream of groups of 2-8 mushrooms popping up here and there around the sub. My best guess is the low ratio I used, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas. Thanks!

So even if you buy sterilized swabs where do you put them after you swab the fruit? Wonβt it become contaminated again if you put it in a bag?

I just use regular q-tips, wrapped in foil and placed inside a jar for PC
But the pre-sterilized wrapped ones are cool because they are longer... never used them tho

Do you have to dry them, or let them dry before wrapping back up for storage?

I just throw them away
A big ass box costs 2 bucks
edit: I see you're wanting them for storing swabs.. not sure, never done this myself. I just swab to agar and toss

Not necessarily storage but I see some guys mail em and stuff. Just seems like it could grow mold if it wasn't dried.

With clean spawn just about any ratio will do... but your yield will depend on (not limited to) the amount of spawn, conditions, and genetics... you should look for 1 dry ounce of mushrooms per quart of spawn first flush... having staggered pinset is generally caused by multispore inoculation (I'm guessing this is MS?) and/or poor conditions

Can probably find something in the search about drying swabs
I'd assume you'd want to let it dry like you dry prints before storage
