That’s a topic of debate as well. If it were to help, I’d say it’s because it’s helping with water retention of the sub as penis varieties tend to take longer to fruit, allowing the sub to dry. I’ve never grown them or tested side by side so can’t really speak to it. It would be cool to see some grows with a proper casing and not just a top layer of coir.

i found with ape that exposed grains gave the worst pinset but grew larger fruits. top layer of coco gave blobby blueberries the first flush but fruited nicely after.
exposed grains

top layers

didnt get around to trying a proper casing but im going too. eating ape changed my life so i gotta grow more

Yeah not doubting that now Caps. Picked what I could out of the failure last night in the garage and noticed other spots fruiting across the sub so definitely the spawn.
I wedge dropped the last of my agar culture in the middle of moving out of a mold bomb of a house. Probably after disturbing all the dust in the house I had 5 times the spores n dust zooming around. Then to cherry top it I try doing sterile work in a dust storm instead of just taking a break.
Keeping a close eye on the other boxes, I'm betting they will likely turn as well if this one did.
All good though, better to fuck up trying to cut a corner and learn from it.
Just hate the feeling now like I got wood ticks all over after finding one. Puts me into the cleaning mood now though
Anyways, shoe boxes!

Lets see how it works out. I also wanted to try the "cased grains" approach:

7 days later, myc starting to push through the (now very uneven) casing.

Noticed some bruising on one side of the box a few days ago, figured it maybe got a bit dry. Now theres the beginning of trich there.
God damn it.
Edit: fuck it, did a surgery to remove that chunk, which confirmed my suspicion it was the spawn (lots of uncolonised/decolonised bits of grain) , and put it outside to fruit.

I had to leave this box for a few days.
I bottom watered and misted it pretty good before I left and put the lid back on. Came back to these.
Not too bad for being left alone for 3 days.

I think it had to do with them hitting the top and opening.looks like the spores dropped under instead of drifting around. I've seen it a few time in similar situations when the lid is left on.

LOL. It seems that I may have a bad habit of forgetting to dub my shoeboxes in time.
Good thing these shoeboxes can adapt.

Well no sidepins on this shoebox but a ton of blobs if it isn’t one thing it’s another. But at least I fixed the side pins problem by raising the water content from what I considered field capacity before

PE blobs are supposed to be pretty potent. (still have not tried them myself) I had a bootbox give me a whole 1st flush of blobs, then a nice 2nd flush of fruits.(around the sides cause the surface was effed)

I think mine will be the same I don’t think I’ll get any normal fruits this first flush.

If a jar is bacterial and therefore took a very long time to colonize (~2 months), is it normal for those same jars to then colonize coir super fast? Or would that mean it was probably not even bacterial in the first place?
Recently I've had some jars colonize extremely slowly, but once I spawn them to coir the mycelium seems to speed way up, and the bulk sub is colonized usually within a week. They seem to be fruiting pretty well as well.
Is this normal for bacterial jars? Or is it more likely my jars aren't bacterial at all and are just colonizing the jars slowly due to some other reason?
Here's a picture of a tub who's jars colonized extremely slow, but then still colonized the coir very fast and fruited fairly well:
