Why does your surface still appear so brown? Did you late-case it or something? I usually use a 1/4 inch top layer at spawn, and within 7 days its usually completely colonized, like in the picture below.

I do the same.About a 1/4" top layer at spawn.Sometimes it will get fully colonized.(my PE did this everytime) These redspore colonized it almost fully.
These "menace" have been pinning as soon as they break the top layer tho,in all the tubs I've spawned of them.
I don't really mist them at all till I see a good pinset either. If my sub prep is good(and spawn clean),they grow themselves. Have you been misting that shoebox? Those beads are a little big for my taste.I like mine to have a fine mist over the surface.
I've had big beads like that, when my sub was a little too wet.

Oh alright, it must just be differences in how our strains fruit. Mine have been colonized for a few days and are only just beginning to knot.
And no, i havent misted that shoebox at all. In the past (when using 4 quarts water) i never had any natural beads of moisture form, and had to mist way too frequently. So this time i decided on using 4.5 quarts water, and the tubs have produced all of those beads of moisture on their own, without needing to mist at all. Do you think ill be able to get a good pinset? Or does that look way too wet in your opinion?

I cut back to just using 4qts per brick recipe. In my case 4.5qts gave me the bigger beads of water, but seemed too wet,and my pinset/flushes did suffer. I think your surface looks good and should be alright tho.Just try to hold off on adding any more moisture, and let them do their thing.

Alright sweet, ill just leave them be with the lids on and continue to not mist at all. Hopefully my pinset wont suffer if i did use a little too much water.
I appreciate the help

Yea lol definitely sounds a little dry to me. I use vermiculite as well, but even without it it seems like most people use at least 4 quarts give or take a little. With 4 quarts about a dozen or so drops would come out when i squeezed the substrate. If i squeezed extremely hard there was a very quick stream. That was still a little too dry for me. My last batch of coir with 4.5 quarts had a nice constant 2-3 second stream that quickly stopped, and so far seems to be doing much better.

Well that would explain why I am having some side pins on my other shoebox then. I always thought a small stream was too wet. When I made a whole brick with 4 quarts of water it had a stream but I added verm to it to dry it some

This are from ziran, they are spot on for me. Field Capacity Examples
Way Over Field Capacity

Over Field Capacity

Right at Field Capacity

I love to aim for the drier side in my situation. Thats 3.5qts h2o per 650 coir brick. Or 4.2qts h2o if 2qts of verm was added on the coirbrix. Might diffent on your situation specialy cor brand..
I like baby sitting them, Since temps are high here and i hate bacteria.. More evap = good if surface condition can be maintained.

I don’t squeeze that hard but if I did I’m sure more drops would come out. I’m a little drier then that gif with ziran

A lil wet but Thats good and close. It really depends on the climate. Ill aim for that capity in your video if i live in colder and drier climates Where i get small surface beads most of the time, with some dry rings around the fae inputs.
But in my tropical climate mostly 84-86f+ temp and 65-75% humidity all the time, thats a bit wet on my liking & i aim for the drier side less than ziran's(3-6 drops by hard squishin) @ the expense of misting & babysitting about 3-4x a week 4x aday with lots of fae, i remove lids when @ home if pins are quite matured since my container doesnt allow fae like shoeboxes if you look @ d lid in d 2nd pic.(ill try grocery bags like bhod for dub tub on the next round for less babysitin)
I get bacteria most of the time if i aim for that capacity in your video. But if subs too dry and i dont babysit em, i get sidepins.
I only got this:
Untill i observe and got sweet spot in my situation Youll learn to get the feel and more observation as time goes. Shoe box are golden and can grow mush even with neglect with lid snap all the time.

I harvested this "menace" shoebox late last night. 4 brf cakes spawned to 2qt coir/verm. Top layered at spawn. No misting til the pinset really came in,then I bottom watered(about 1/4 cup)and dubbed it about 24 hrs before harvest.
