Looks good. Only thing I noticed is they mostly grew right down the middle. The corners and sides are almost vacant. Wonder if there's a way u could help the conditions in those areas and get the next box filled wall to wall. Looks great tho. Awesome shoebox.

Hi people
As soon as i dont spawn my shoeboxe with a top layer of CVG, i get tons of side/bottom pins, theres my worst one, plus my dehydrator was loaded two days in a row when that shoeboxe was ready to harvest, so its sporeplosion in there lol, honestly, thats my worst looking shoeboxe since i started haha, but, i think im gonna get my biggest first flush ever with this one, some BIG dude in there.

There is my 5th flush of my first grow

And finally, i have a shoeboxe who seem to dont drop spore, plus the shrooms are small... weird

R.I.P.Zappa said: I just used scissors to cut the mature ones out. Seen in Bod's pics he leaves roughly a 1/4 inch stumps with no issues. problem with scissors is some are cut at a angle rather than straight. On my first mini mono I was cutting pretty low and touching the sub allot with my hand and tearing the sub at times. Seemed to mat the surface quicker and it probably doesn't help the other knots forming. so trying his approach. When I move in a few weeks, gonna try DIY a scythe like scalpel so I can come in like a logging helicopter. Also weighed my tub this time at spawn and after harvest and added 3/4 of water weight back in on the side with a syringe. It sucked all back up this morning. Now clear cutting before work.

Any thoughts on these subs? It's my first grow. I spawned to bulk with no pseudocasing or casing three days ago. Haven't introduced FAE yet. No scent except for when I give a light misting I get a big ol whiff of shrooms. Too early to tell what the pinset might look like?

Cool. Since this is the first examples of substrates that I've actually been able to look at in person, I'm trying to learn everything I can from them each step along the way. The pictures on the forum are helpful but it's not the same thing.

Did a search but couldn't seem to pinpoint an answer. About on avg. how long does it take for a 1:1 6qt shoebox take to colonize?

I wasn't too worried about it. Bod had exposed grain in his video. I let those jars colonize to a thick 100% then I gave them a shake and they all recovered in 3 days. If there were any uncolonized grains there weren't many. I don't see anything moldy to my untrained eye. We'll see how it looks in a few weeks.

I didn't mean that, I meant production of mushrooms.

I usually do 1.5 full quarts of bulk and a mycoquart of grain (~700 mL) in my shoeboxes

I'll see how it goes. Usually mine end up coming up to the line once finished, but I tried this for the first time since this is how it worked out
Usually I do a brick of coir to 4 boxes but this time I did three

wow...1 brick usually gets me about 5 or 6 shoeboxes.

I'm with Tormato, 1 brick goes a long way and the height of my sub usually doesn't go above 2 inches. But I use low spawn ratios, either 1/2 or 1 quart per box, and often don't case. If I do case, its a very thin layer

What's the reasoning and effect of thinner subs in shoeboxes? I would have thought youd want them the same thickness as monotubs?

This gets at the heart of the topic I raised earlier: the idea of an ideal volume-to-surface area. Still haven't been able to find anything, but surely we can agree that it's somewhere between a 1/4" deep pancake and a "tower" of substrate.
