Alright sweet thats what ill do.

During the second flush do you usually see beads on the surface still? Sometimes after rehydrating my surface seems slightly matted and like it wont bead up anymore.

Honestly,I don't check on them much till I see pins.I just put the lid on and mist if it looks way dry on top.
Here's how my surface usually looks with the 2nd flush coming in.(trashed from the first flush:facepalm:)

Hey, do you know anything about fruiting in a brf jar though? Because if I do that for one of my jars, the process is basically to unscrew the lid, scoop out the top layer of verm, apply a new layer (why?) and mist. My question is, do I need to sterilize the new verm by baking it or anything like that?

Why- Because the old layer is full of contams from being your filter, it's just better to replace it with fresh for a moisture retaining top layer.

No, you don't need to sterilize fresh verm. It's pretty clean out of the bag and once the cake is colonized you don't need to worry about being sterile, just clean.

You can put the dry verm layer you remove in the oven at 350 for an hour to make it clean enough to use for cake rolling or cv bulk.

U can do that in open air. Dump old verm, optional rinse, then add layer of new dry Verm. Then most till moist. That simple.

And the old verm is ur contam filter, so u wanna dump out all the spores from molds that are in it from colonization.

Wow... That js a REALLY nice pinset..Just curious as to your process - is that pure coir? manure/coir? Did you follow the DubTub Tek?

Also I was windering if you (or anyone) has tried late casing with a dubtub / shoebox, abd how the results looked? Im running my own trial with:

Ecuador (MS) spawned in BRF mycobag (2lbs) into coir/verm/coffee/gypsum):

Penis Envy (first “round”  sector iso) WBS (1qt.) into coir/straw/verm/coffee/gypsum/lime:

[

Here’s F+ (MS) from WBS; and grown following exactly to the DubTub tek (100% coir, casing is peat/verm/lime/oyster shell):
It’s a little futher along than the Ecuador & PE, and I am hoping the pinset is still ...weell..pinning lol  I have noticed brand new pins still pushing through, so i would really like to see a more consisitently even pinset at the end of the flush - although it is still a nice grow imo  its only my 3rd [successful] mini-bulk and being an MS I am guessing tgis is pretty solid?

oh and PS: The images that don’t look as colonized are images I played with the levels a bit to try and make the knots stick out a bit more... I think I have a crazy number of knots on the first two boxes.... thoughts? Anything I should be doibg or doing differently? Thanks

MS Stropharia crazily rhizo, and fast developing... looks similar to photos I've seen posted where people seem to think it indicates some kind of contam, but as far as I can tell its just healthy myc that is like a monster colonizer. 8 shoeboxes spawned of this so far and they all show the same kind of rhizo growth

Would you rinse or no? How exactly does one rinse? Hot or cold water, how long, etc

U can just slide the cake out a lil and just run it under cool water to rinse the verm off. Nothing scientific lol and tbh I don't make cakes, I do grains and bulk. But I know rinsing the dry verm off is fine. And only as long as it takes the verm to rinse off. Maybe 15 seconds.

My first shoe box this morning. MS, white millet, sterilized CVG 1:2 ratio, PES/Hawaiian.

10 hours later after harvesting 54 wet g of open caps.

Loving shoe boxes! the other two are right behind it by 3 days. :awesomenod:

Thanks for the inspiring thread Mushboy! :jackiechanofapproval:

How does one harvest a flush? Just cut the mushrooms out? And how do second flushes work? Just keep misting as usual after harvest and another flush happens?

You can just use scissors/knife to cut them off or some people just twist and pull them off.
Second flush for shoeboxes I just let them rest for a day then “dunk” them by pouring water in for a few hours but I’ve only done a few shoeboxes so I’m still learning the best way to bring in the second flush.

What do you mean pouring water in for a few hours? Like you run them under a faucet?

thats one way to do it.

a shoebox shoudl only need about half cup of water after flush one. just dump that water down the side of the tote. after a few hours, pour off any excess.

Pour a little water down the side of the box, from a cup or bottle or whatever.Let it sit for a few hours.(I do mine overnight)Then tilt the box, support the sub,and carefully drain any excess water out of the tub.

I've been pouring about an inch of tap water in between each flush and leaving for about 12hrs before pouring out. Interesting how yellow/brown the water is when poured off.
I'm on flush four for two of my boxes..I'll dump them after that I think.

I just used scissors to cut the mature ones out. Seen in Bod's pics he leaves roughly a 1/4 inch stumps with no issues. problem with scissors is some are cut at a angle rather than straight. On my first mini mono I was cutting pretty low and touching the sub allot with my hand and tearing the sub at times. Seemed to mat the surface quicker and it probably doesn't help the other knots forming. so trying his approach. When I move in a few  weeks, gonna try DIY a scythe like scalpel so I can come in like a logging helicopter. :laugh2: Also weighed my tub this time at spawn and after harvest and added 3/4 of water weight back in on the side with a syringe. It sucked all back up this morning. Now clear cutting before work.

That's a good idea, weighing b4 and after and adding the water lost during fruiting. I'm gonna give that a try.

+54 grams from yesterday wet.

Putting the lid back on to help fuzz over the stumps for the day.
