Thx guys. I'm really pumped to see how these come out. Will update with a photo of the harvest in a few days.

These little cute 1/2 shoe boxes for CD's caught my eye today. Usually the smaller sterolites under showbox size are a bit shallow, these are not.

Nice loose lid, down side is its on a hinge but nothing a hard to modify too a normal lid. Got a couple pint jars with millet because I prepped to much so I'll give em a shot in a couple weeks.

$1.39 a piece, Hardware Hank. I noticed allot of hardware stores have unique small sterolite containers for tools n stuff. Seems dollar stores have small boxes for pencils and crap but there often too shallow when smaller than a shoe box. I have gotten in the habit of finding the storage/pantery container section of any store I walk in now and look for inspiration.

I think when it's all said and done you'll wish you used something bigger. I did

Just because those little boxes don't put out as much as a bigger one. I used some just about that same size. They were sterilite cd holders with green handles. They worked but didn't come close to the yield of a shoebox. Next round I'm goin tubs

Yeah if your going for yield that size would be detrimental. My thought is for clone and isolate test runs without having to hold up spawning jars or mess with 2nd hand containers like peanut butter jars, or grow a ounce of fail fruits and so fourth.
My main purpose for sharing is it is hard to find a small container with enough head space for the myc and fruits to do most of their grow without me. There pretty much a mini shoe box as far as modification is concerned.

About to spawn this to a shoebox today. I hope that’s bruising and not mold/trich. Well find out soon

That’s good to hear! I was worried it would throw a trich bomb on me while I’m out of town this weekend

While I wait for the 16qt that I under-inoculated to show me what it's going to do, I'm going to do a couple traditional size shoeboxes with coir/earthworm castings/verm with the contents of some additional jars I have that are almost ready.
Before I do, I have a question. I'm sure the answer is out there somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it. Is there an "ideal" surface area-to-depth ratio? What is the conventional wisdom regarding depth in these shoebox grows? TIA!

Bring the level up to that first molded in ridge line in the 6qt sterlite and call it good.

Thank you!
That said, I wonder if there is an ideal surface area to volume ratio. Obviously something 20" x 20" x 0.5" isn't going to do real well. And 6" x 6" x 6" would be a waste, yes? So somewhere between "pancake" and "cube" there's a ratio that maximizes fruiting surface but maintains enough substrate mass to support growth and reserve moisture. Or am I thinking about this incorrectly?

Beats me. I'm sure somebody somewhere came up with the 'perfect' formula. My main concern is clean grain spawn. If I can achieve that then the cubes just literally grow themselves.
The KISS method is the best approach to mush cult. Imo.
